The summer transfer window may have only recently closed, but senior figures at Stamford Bridge have already undertaken groundwork ahead of the next transfer window and beyond.

During the most recent window, Chelsea addressed many key areas of the first team. This included adding Premier League-proven experience, and the squad's average age also rose with the acquisitions of Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson.

With the summer approach deemed an overall success, it is understood that more can be done in the transfer windows ahead. With the recent sale of Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City in a joint-British-record sale of £125 million, the Blues have plenty of financial muscle to flex.

According to The Telegraph, the west London side will look to strengthen their midfield in both January and the 2027 summer transfer market, with the Blues being at the front of the queue for England international Alex Scott.

It is no secret that Xabi Alonso’s side are in the market once again for a midfielder following the collapsed deadline-day move for Monaco’s Lamine Camara. Chelsea saw a bid accepted for the Senegal midfielder before senior figures at the Ligue 1 side pulled the plug at the eleventh hour.

Scott has also been a long-term target at Stamford Bridge, with multiple reports over the summer stating that the Blues had at least one approach in the region of £60m rejected by AFC Bournemouth.

The English star recently made his first start for his nation in the 7-0 victory over Croatia in the UEFA Nations League on October 3, which could raise his profile further and lead to increased competition.

Why do Chelsea need a midfielder?

Following the recent injury setback to Moises Caicedo and the sales of both Enzo Fernandez and Andrey Santos, the Blues have left themselves light in the centre of the park.

Jordan Henderson has recently returned from an arm injury he picked up at the World Cup, while Valentín Barco is still adapting to the Premier League. Club captain Reece James has been utilised as a midfielder so far, but doubts remain over his long-term availability after missing the latest England squad due to injury.

Romeo Lavia continues to work his way back to consistent fitness after suffering multiple injuries since joining Chelsea from Southampton back in 2023.

Internal solutions include 16-year-old academy duo Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli and recently crowned PL2 Player of the Month winner Reggie Watson. Both have been handed first-team opportunities so far under Alonso.
