With European giants like Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, and Barcelona circling, Cruzeiro has secured one of its top prospects with a new deal.
Chelsea’s long-standing interest in Cruzeiro teenager Felipe Morais has hit a roadblock after the Brazilian club secured the 17-year-old with a new contract through 2029.
The Blues submitted a €10 million offer last year to test the waters, despite the attacking midfielder’s €100 million international release clause. Atletico Madrid has also been tracking him closely, while Barcelona previously made inquiries.
Cruzeiro announced the extension on Friday, keeping the hefty €100 million clause intact as they look to develop the talent further and position him for a future move.
Felipe Morais has shone with Brazil’s under-17 national team, appearing in seven of eight matches at the Under-17 World Cup and scoring two goals; that performance during the tournament drew interest from scouts at several European teams.
Since joining Cruzeiro in 2017, he has made 72 academy appearances, scoring 13 goals, captaining teams, and evolving from a central midfielder into a versatile attacking role. The young player’s talent is so striking that many people already compare him to former Real Madrid player Kaka.
The young prospect, who can operate across the front line, impresses with his ability to drop deep to receive, control the tempo, and link up play. Chelsea, known for targeting high-potential talent under 25, now watches as Cruzeiro plans to give him more first-team exposure.
For now, the Blues will have to navigate the remainder of the season with a squad that typically suffers significant injury absences, one of whom is none other than Estevao, another jewel of Brazilian football who Chelsea secured last August, and who undoubtedly has all the potential to become the next big star in world football.
There is no doubt that the west London side has a very strong squad -- Enzo, Caicedo, James, Palmer, to name a few -- but the team has yet to click under coach Liam Rosenior’s system fully. It is clear, however, that once the gears are synchronized again, Chelsea will be a team to watch, as they proved last summer when they won the inaugural Club World Cup.
For now, Chelsea’s pursuit of Morais is on hold, but the club’s commitment to securing Brazil’s brightest young talents remains clear. Whether they return for the teenager or shift focus elsewhere.
