After failed deadline-day pursuits, Chelsea and other clubs are on high alert as Bournemouth attract an auction for Alex Scott
The summer transfer window may have closed just shy of two months ago, but speculation is beginning to heat up ahead of January and the months beyond.
Following Enzo Fernandez’s British-record £125 million move to Manchester City, Chelsea have been exploring the market for a midfielder.
On transfer deadline day, the Blues were active in the market, looking to bolster new boss Xabi Alonso’s midfield options. With Chelsea having reportedly seen three offers in the region of £64 million rejected for Bournemouth’s Alex Scott earlier in the window, it became clear that the English midfielder would not be going anywhere over the summer.
In response, the west London side reportedly turned their attention to several other names in the final hours of the window, including James Garner and Sander Berge. However, the two main targets were Roma’s Manu Koné and Monaco’s Lamine Camara. With a move for the former becoming unrealistic, the Blues went all in on the Monaco star.
Camara was set to join the Blues in a £47m deal, but Monaco reportedly went back on their agreement after the 11 pm deadline on September 1. Chelsea were left furious and, as a result, ended the window without a deadline-day addition, leaving a midfielder on the agenda for January 2027.
Following recent reports that the Cherries are ready to sanction a sale for Scott if a significant offer arrives, Sky Sports have reported that an offer in excess of £80 million, including add-ons, would have to be given serious consideration by the south coast side.
The Cherries' reported willingness to consider significant offers has put Chelsea and other potential suitors on red alert. A midfielder of his talent rarely becomes available on the market, and his potential availability could represent a market opportunity for rival clubs, despite the Blues’ public interest.
The 23-year-old is currently sidelined with an injury picked up while on England duty and recently missed Bournemouth’s 5-1 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on October 10.
With Scott’s Bournemouth contract running until June 2028 and no extension reportedly on the horizon, his future could become a major talking point in January or next summer.
Do Chelsea have room in midfield for Alex Scott?
Chelsea's need for midfield reinforcements becomes clearer when looking at their recent departures and the fitness concerns surrounding several key players. Andrey Santos joined Manchester United in a £50m deal, while a third departure from the centre of the park saw Dario Essugo join Strasbourg on loan.
With only Jordan Henderson and Valentín Barco arriving during the most recent window, there may be room for one or two additional midfielders. While Henderson and Barco are more comfortable operating in deeper positions, Scott could offer greater productivity in the final third, providing an additional creative threat in attacking areas.
With club captain Reece James currently nursing a knee injury and Romeo Lavia still being closely monitored, the world champions have only one reliable, long-term option in midfield: Moises Caicedo, who himself has had to overcome a recent injury scare.
Scott’s work rate in both defensive and attacking phases could complement Caicedo well. The England international has also earned praise for his ability to progress the ball and ranks highly among his Premier League peers for chance creation.
