Crystal Palace Women travel to Birmingham City this weekend for their next WSL match.
Crystal Palace Women will travel to Birmingham City on Sunday 27 September for their fourth Women's Super League tie of the season. The match is a huge game for Palace against a team they are all too familiar with, and will be available to watch on Sky Sports.
Palace joined Birmingham in the journey from the WSL2 to WSL this season, and this match is a huge game for both sides as a measure of their performance and analysing some indications of how the relegation in the WSL could go.
Jo Potter's side will be hoping for a stronger result following their 7-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the WSL last weekend, which brought their clean sheet record to an end. Their mid-week 1-0 victory over Watford in the Players Cup did boost spirits, however Palace have still only scored two goals in four matches which does not match the attacking output the Eagles should be aiming for.
This game is a must win match for Potter's side in order to show they have got what it takes to push for remaining in the WSL after this season, and to reflect they have truly taken the next step up in their competitiveness.
The Opposition
Palace travel to Birmingham for their Sunday 2:00pm kick-off, against a team who they have not lost to since the 2023/24 season when Palace won promotion for the first time to the WSL.
Despite Birmingham beating Palace on goal difference to lift the WSL2 trophy last season, the Eagles were victorious in both of their meetings with 3-1 and 3-0 score lines.
Birmingham have a very strong attack which should not be underestimated by Potter’s side. In the season so far they have scored three goals but currently sit 12th in the table on one point following a draw to Brighton and defeats to Chelsea and Manchester City.
In all of their games so far Birmingham have really struggled with possession, averaging around 22-30% possession. Their time on the ball has been limited and so have their opportunities. Palace’s previous opponents in the WSL so far this season have been teams that dominate possession, with this tie giving Palace a chance to control the game a bit more.
At the centre of their draw against Brighton was French forward Océane Hurtré who hit the back of the net eight minutes into the game before sealing an assist on their second goal. She is certainly one for Potter’s side to keep an eye on in this tie, as she is likely to generate the main chances of Birmingham’s attack.
This fixture is huge for both clubs offering an opportunity to signify their strength in the league this season. For Palace the pressure is on but the fixture also allows for more comfort after facing tough and experienced WSL opponents for their first three games.
