Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson is reported to have agreed a new contract with Palace until 2030.
As reported by the Daily Mail Dean Henderson has agreed a new contract with Crystal Palace extending his stay in South London until 2030. This contract also makes the Palace captain their highest-paid player.
Henderson is currently out injured with an ankle injury that was sustained in pre-season, although he is expected back after the international break in time to face Nottingham Forest in what is now becoming a fan favourite intense tie.
Contract negotiations have been ongoing between Henderson and the club for the last few months, with Nottingham Forest and former manager Oliver Glasner enquiring about a bid for Henderson just three days before the summer transfer window closes.
He joined Palace in 2023 on a £15million deal from Manchester United, with two years left on his current five year contract. Palace have been working to tie down Henderson due to his integral part of Palace’s side, especially after the last few seasons of rapid change to Palace’s leaders and defence.
After joining Palace Henderson quickly overtook Sam Johnstone to take the number 1 spot, and became a fan favourite due to his important part of Palace’s historic trophy winning seasons. His legendary penalty save in the FA Cup final and his clean sheets in the quarter-final, semi-final and final will go down in Palace’s history.
Security that Palace’s defence needs
In Palace’s 3-2 defeat to Ipswich on the weekend Henderson’s absence was noticed, and while Walter Benitez is a strong replacement, as shown by the game against Middlesbrough, it is not just in goal where Henderson makes his biggest mark.
Against Ipswich Adam Wharton took the captain’s armband, in a move that Palace fans were unsure about. While Wharton is one of Palace’s strongest players and often controls the midfield, some fans felt he did not offer the experienced voice a captain on the field requires.
The departure of Marc Guehi and Maxence Lacroix over the last two seasons has seen two experienced and leadership voices exit the palace dressing room in a move that could be damaging for the unity in the squad. With the new additions in Palace’s defence and across the squad the absence of a clear leadership voice on the pitch could be damaging, at a time where the squad really needs to be unified.
Henderson is the perfect captain for this Palace squad and the future of the club. He has a strong bond with the fanbase, and has truly brought into the club and what Palace stands for.
