Oliver Glasner has joined the shortlist of managers who may take over the Chelsea job this summer. Glasner will leave Crystal Palace this summer after the Conference League final.
Oliver Glasner has been placed on Chelsea’s shortlist of potential managers for next season, according to a report in the Telegraph.
Glasner announced he will leave Crystal Palace this summer on 16 January, in what was a tumultuous time at Selhurst Park, with the club on a winless streak and Marc Guehi completing his move to Manchester City.
But since then, the Austrian has recovered things somewhat, with Palace stabilising in the league and reaching the Conference League final, which will be his last match in charge of the south London club.
Now, Glasner is the latest addition to Chelsea’s shortlist of managers to take over this summer, with Callum McFarlane manning the fort until the end of the season following the end of Liam Rosenior’s disastrous reign last month.
Glasner joins Filipe Luis, who won the Premier League and League Cup with Chelsea in the 2014/15 season on the shortlist, according to Matt Law of the Telegraph.
He is particularly attractive to Chelsea due to the fact that he will be a free agent in June, while the Chelsea hierarchy likes his Premier League experience and his success both at Frankfurt, where he won the Europa League and at Palace.
But Glasner is an outspoken manager, and that much was made clear when his stern words effectively prevented the departure of Marc Guehi in August, when the defender was close to joining Liverpool.
Chelsea have previously had their issues with outspoken managers, not least Enzo Maresca, with the board not overly happy when he spoke his mind in his 18-month spell at Stamford Bridge.
Glasner and Luis join the three-strong list of Marco Silva, Andoni Iraola and Xabi Alonso.
It is said that there is no time frame on finding the replacement, with Chelsea desperate for the next manager to be the right one, following Rosenior, Maresca, Mauricio Pochettino and Graham Potter’s short reigns in west London.
In his article, Law said: “Oliver Glasner and Filipe Luis are among the group of head coaches Chelsea are making checks on as they search for a permanent successor to Liam Rosenior.
“Glasner could add the Europa Conference League to the FA Cup he won with Palace this season and the Austrian has also won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt.
“While Glasner ticks some boxes for Chelsea with his Premier League, European and trophy-winning experience, his outspoken nature could potentially cause an issue.
“He has openly criticised Palace’s transfer activity and Chelsea’s owners took a dim view of former head coach Enzo Maresca publicly speaking his mind.
“Chelsea want a new head coach with top-level experience after their gamble on taking Rosenior out of sister club Strasbourg went disastrously wrong.”
Glasner could be the latest Crystal Palace export to make their way to one of Europe’s biggest clubs, and he will be hoping he can be as succesful as Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi.
