Quinten Timber has reflected on the two defeats to Lyon and Brighton, and has apologised to the fans for the display of the team.
Crystal Palace have had a really tough week, losing 3-2 away to Lyon after another poor first half display before being thumped by rivals Brighton at the Amex.
The good thing about football is it moves fast, and already Palace have a chance to make things right as they face Beşiktaş in Istanbul on Thursday evening, and then again on Sunday against Newcastle.
Following the defeat last weekend, Sky Sports’ Chris Reidy, who has been providing excellent coverage of the club so far this season, spoke to summer signing Quinten Timber.
Here’s everything you might have missed from that interview, and a considered look at Timber’s responses.
Timber ‘felt bad for the fans’ following Brighton defeat
Losing 5-0 in the Premier League but losing 5-0 to rivals Brighton is something previously unimaginable for Palace fans. The biggest defeat for the Eagles in this fixture's history was by three goals, and so to be down 3-0 inside ten minutes was a true nightmare.
“It was a really bad game for us, after the game I just felt bad for the fans. We went to the fans after the game and we know how important this game was for them, it’s a derby obviously, you cannot start like that in the first ten minutes.”
Palace went one down just three minutes in when Jaydee Canvot headed into his own net from close range. From that point it was an uphill battle for Palace, who conceded a worldie from Diego Gomez before Yasin Ayari made it 3-0 within ten minutes.
“We felt bad, we still feel bad, we wanna do better obviously, we’re stil a new team with a new coach as well so we need time to improve but at the same time we have to perform every week so there’s not really time.”
“We know we have to do better and we will work everyday to get better, and hopefully we can show in the next game that we’ve learnt from this game.”
The lack of pre-season has certainly impacted things, and the number of starters who were away for the World Cup has clearly delayed the side’s progression with the new system.
In a year without a major international tournament, Palace could have been in a very different position.
Where they find themselves though, is in a season where they are playing once every three to four days, and so the games are the only way the side can truly progress, which Timber alluded to.
“We have to move on and whilst you can be negative, for us it’s like, ‘okay, we have to get better, it cannot happen again and there’s a game on Thursday where we have to perform.’”
The reaction from Timber and Sage in their interviews, but also from Chris Richards and Jørgen Strand Larsen on social media shows that the players clearly understand that what happened at the Amex on Sunday was unacceptable.
Now it's about how the side can bounce back from this.
