Crystal Palace's Player of the Month for September has been announced, highlighting the importance of a new contract for Tyrick Mitchell at the club.

Tyrick Mitchell has been announced as Crystal Palace’s player of the month for September, after an excellent start to the new season for the left back.

Mitchell has been one of Palace’s best performers so far this campaign, and winning this award was the least he deserved for the performances he’s contributed so far.

He was the clear winner in the fan decided award, with an overwhelming 45.5% of the vote, Quinten Timber the closest behind him with 25.6%, followed by both Strand Larsen and Yéremy Pino with around 11% each.

This award is Mitchell’s fourth, his first coming back in November 2021, adding to the other memorable records he holds from his time with the club. Mitchell remains Palace’s youngest player to reach 200 top-flight appearances, breaking the record that belonged to Wilf Zaha.

How Mitchell won Player of the Month

Mitchell made four appearances for Palace in September, playing in four of the club’s five games across the first full month of the season.

The month started with a trip to Craven Cottage to face Fulham in the third game of the Premier League season, a narrow 3-2 win in which Mitchell bagged himself a brace. He was an unused substitute in the 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Middlesbrough, but returned to the side for the following game against Ipswich at Selhurst Park.

Despite the loss, Mitchell put in another strong performance, as he did too in the following game, as Palace beat Lech Poznań 4-0 in their opening Europa League game.

Whilst it’s been a slow start to the season in terms of results for Palace, Mitchell has been one of the consistent performers that has made an impact on his side so far this season.

New contract a must for Mitchell and Palace

With his performances this season considered, but also the level that he has consistently played at for Palace, for the vast majority of games since his breakout season, Mitchell undoubtedly deserves a new contract.

Mitchell’s current deal expires in June 2027, although the club holds an option to extend the deal by one year to the summer of 2028. Earlier in September, Football Insider revealed a story which indicated that Palace are doing everything in their power to agree new and improved terms with Mitchell.

If he was to be available, it is a certainty that some of Europe’s biggest clubs would be interested, even if they saw Mitchell as a backup option. His time at Palace has proven that he is a top level defensive full back.

Since graduating from Palace’s academy, where he was signed to from Brentford when their youth setup disbanded, Mitchell has not only become a top player, but saved Palace as a club a whole bucketful of cash, and simultaneously a whole host of managers a headache.

He’s not had a single injury issue since 2021, playing roughly 200 games since then. Last season, he played a remarkable 54 times for Palace, including every single Premier League game.

At 27, Mitchell is now entering his prime years, and whilst he could go on to secure a big move, he could instead opt to become a true club icon, a one club man with Palace, and go down in the history books as one of the all time Palace legends.
