The Premier League returns to our screens this week, with last week's news dominated by confirmed and rumoured transfers. Here is our weekly roundup of last week's news.
Confirmed Transfers
With one of the worst kept secrets of the transfer window, Palace have finally revealed the signing of Anan Khalaili on a deal until 2031. He was pictured in Germany with the squad and his move was referenced by the CEO of USG, his former club, before Palace revealed the deal. The defender has huge potential for his time at Palace, after playing in the Champions League last season.
Brennan Johnson’s departure from South London in exchange for Everton’s Dwight McNeil was officially announced by the clubs. Johnson’s exit comes after just seven months playing for the club, making 26 appearances in all competitions without a single goal. It was an unlucky time for the Welsh international who struggled with his confidence. McNeil joins also in search of a refresh of playing style.
Palace also announced another confirmed transfer with Evan Guessand returning on loan for another season. Guessand impressed Palace fans in the latter half of last season, with many happy to see him return after it was reported earlier in the window that Palace would not be launching a bid to sign him on a permanent basis.
Rio Cardines has also headed out on loan to Bristol City for the rest of the season to continue his development and playing time after his breakthrough season. In a shock update future prospect Hindolo Mustapha has had his loan ended with Wigan Athletic only a month on from joining the club and has now been sent to Notts County. The attacking midfielder spent 4 months last season on loan at FC Nurnberg and then West Brom for three months. He only made 2 appearances in each loan spell.
Transfer Rumours
The signing of Anan Khalaili, alongside Oscar Mingueza earlier in the window, frees up Daniel Muñoz for a potential exit since three players are now competing for the same position. SDespite being one of the greatest value signings in Palace history, Muñoz is 30-years-old and the club will likely be looking to cash in with Everton among clubs who have expressed their interest.
In recent news Romain Esse’s move to Club Brugge has been put on hold as the club focuses on player sales to raise funds. Esse remains in the lurch about his future, with him unable to break through under Oliver Glasner or establish a solid goal scoring record on loan at Coventry last season.
Similarly to Khalaili, the signing of American youngster Zavier Gozo has been heavily rumoured and confirmed before the club. He is set to join for a fee around £11million.
All other news
On Saturday Palace played their final pre-season friendly before the Premier League returns to our screens this week. The Eagles lost 2-0 in 90 minutes to Freiburg before losing 1-0 in an extra 30 minute friendly.
The match saw new signings and players returning from international duty, although the consensus from fans is that Palace appeared tired and predictable. Evan Guessand and Mateus Franca joined the match later on in the game but made a positive impact. Dean Henderson was forced off early on with an injury, with limited indication of how serious this could be.
Reports from Colombia are suggesting Jefferson Lerma has renewed his contact with Palace, keeping him in South London until 2028. This could be a good move to maintain experienced squad depth.
Club legend Wilfred Zaha has been spotted training at Coopers Cove over the last few weeks following the expiration of his contract. Fans have been dreaming of a potential return, although reports suggest Palace are not considering re-signing him.
In other news Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis is suing Palace for defamation for the banner unveiled by fans last season, depicting the owner as holding a gun to Morgan Gibbs-White’s head. The claim has been made against CPFC Ltd and “persons unknown” to the high court. Palace were previously fined £50,000 by the FA in February for the banner.
