Crystal Palace's deadline day dealings kept the attention of fans throughout the day, with four new signings, a huge transfer saga and a number of departures too.

After a frantic deadline day, Crystal Palace ended the transfer window with four incomings on the final day of the window. Honest Ahanor, Ben Chilwell, Quinten Timber and Darío Osorio were all announced on the final day of the window, with both Osorio and Timber completed at the very last minute.

Palace end the window with just two permanent first team departures, with a couple of academy players leaving Selhurst permanently and joining a whole host of Championship sides.

The final day of the window was always going to be a stressful one, but the way it unfolded was truly exhilarating. Here’s everything that went down in case you missed it, player by player.

Honest Ahanor

The least problematic of Palace’s late business, Ahanor’s permanent move to Chelsea, scheduled for next summer, was announced first thing this morning, and his arrival on loan in South London was confirmed at around 13:00.

Ahanor is an excellent signing, but there is understandable frustration that Palace will only get to enjoy him for one season. An 18-year-old defender who’s played numerous games in the Champions League and transferred for £40 million will certainly provide Palace with quality this season though.

Malik Fofana

Possibly the most bizarre transfer saga of the entire window, this was a deal which came out of nowhere, dominated the headlines and then eventually concluded with the original move.

At around 12:30pm, news broke that Crystal Palace were attempting to hijack Sunderland’s move for Lyon winger Malick Fofana. Pierre Sage coached Fofana at Lyon, and was keen to reunite with the Belgian international.

Within just under two hours, the hijack appeared to be successful. Almost every major journalist was reporting that Fofana had chosen Palace, and the winger was set to travel to London to complete a medical.

The feeling of adulation and buzz lasted for just two hours, when news then broke that Sunderland were not yet out of the race. The Black Cats offered a bumper wage, and more importantly a bumper bonus to Fofana’s uncle, and agency Roc Nation.

Palace seemed uninterested in matching Sunderland’s offer, but eventually came back to the table to match the offer. Fofana completed a medical in Lyon, with his parent club’s doctors, with the medical information set to be shared with both interested parties.

Fofana gave a firm ‘yes’ to both Palace and Sunderland, on two separate occasions, but couldn’t make his mind up. Palace had also requested further medical records, as Fofana missed a huge chunk of last season due to ankle surgery.

Sunderland decided that was no bother and pushed through to secure the signing ahead of Palace.

It appeared that Palace had wasted their window chasing a target who was never likely to join, until further news began to break.

Ben Chilwell

Another singing that came out of nowhere, although the rumours first began to leak as Borna Sosa’s season-long loan move to 1.FC Koln, Palace managed to negotiate a free transfer with Strasbourg who allowed Chilwell to leave his contract early and return to Palace on a permanent basis, after he was part of the FA Cup winning squad.

An unproblematic signing, but an upgrade on Borna Sosa and a great depth option behind Tyrick Mitchell.

Quinten Timber

A name which had been linked with the club consistently throughout the summer, the rumours between Timber and Palace seemed to collapse due to agents asking for too much money. Palace reportedly enquired about Mainz’s Japanese midfielder Kaishu Sano, but had a £30 million bid rejected.

Timber then reemerged as an option and Palace pushed hard to get the deal over the line. Whilst he doesn’t necessarily bring enough quality to replace either Wharton or Kamada in the starting XI, Timber certainly bridges the quality difference between the starting options and backups.

Darío Osorio

A long-term Palace target, but a name which had been somewhat disregarded throughout the summer window, when news broke at around 18:25 that the player was set to sign for Palace, another wave of transfer excitement ensued.

It did take around five hours from the first rumour to the transfer being all but confirmed, but in Osorio, Palace have secured a long-term target who is highly tipped to have an extraordinary future.

The deal for Osorio appeared pretty straight-forward. A loan with an obligation to buy for €28m + €4m in add-ons has been agreed and Osorio rounded off Palace's deadline day incomings.

Deadline day moves were also secured for the likes of Joe Whitworth, David Ozoh and Justin Devenny too.
