Crystal Palace have entered talks to sign Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes. That is according to BBC’s Nizaar Kinsella, who reports that Palace are keen on the Brazilian.

Tom Masters explains the Joao Gomes situation.

Crystal Palace have expressed an interest in signing Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes this summer.

The Brazilian has been one of the sole shining lights in a Wolves team who have been dead last in the Premier League for almost the entire season.

As such, the 25-year-old is expected to leave Molineux this summer with his current club likely to accept deals in and around the £40 million mark.

Gomes signed from Flamengo for a fee of around €18.7 million in January 2023, beating Ligue 1 side Lyon to his signature.

He immediately made an impact, scoring on debut in a 2-1 win over Southampton.

He has now played in 127 games for the club over the last three-and-a-half seasons and has become an essential member of the team.

Gomes has been capped 10 times by Brazil and will stand no chance of selection if playing in the Championship.

He signed a new five-year contract with Wolves in April 2025, which puts the club in a strong negotiating position, but they accept that they will not be able to keep some of their star players when in the second division.

Crystal Palace have already benefitted from that when signing Jorgen Strand Larsen in January and, according to Nizaar Kinsella at the BBC, they arer looking to make the most of Wolves’ misfortune for a second time.

Palace are not the only club showing an interest though, with Spanish giants Atletico Madrid also keen and, unsurprisingly given their status, they are the frontrunners.

Kinsella wrote: “Palace have held early contact with Gomes' agency, with Wolves currently asking for offers of around £40m.

“Atletico Madrid are also believed to have expressed an interest in Gomes and are widely known to be strong favourites for his signature as they look at add a midfielder to their squad this summer.

“They have, however, also shown an interest in Atalanta midfielder Ederson, which may open up opportunities for Gomes to move elsewhere, including within the Premier League.”

Palace of course, may be in a position of power financially this summer, should Adam Wharton depart the club for Liverpool.

That would also create a clear path into the first team for Gomes, who right now would have to contend with both Daichi Kamada and Wharton.

Of course, with Oliver Glasner departing, it is not yet clear what formation Palace will be playing next season but one thing is for sure, if they can secure the services of Gomes, they will be in a financially excellent position.
