David Ornstein has provided an update on Everton's potential spending in the January transfer window.
The Friedkin Group are looking to sell Everton in the coming months, but the chances of a deal going through before the January transfer window are slim.
A new ownership group would have to go through a number of tests before being granted permission to take over a Premier League club. Manchester City's owners being hit with 115 charges might even tighten up the ownership test, which means a sale of Everton isn't going to be quick and easy.
The January transfer window needs to be a big one for Everton. The summer market was incredibly disappointing, leaving David Moyes with a small squad to work with for at least the first half of the season.
Concerns have emerged among Evertonians about the upcoming winter window due to the fact that TFG are looking to sell the club.
So, how is the January transfer window going to look for Everton?
David Ornstein shares Everton update
Speaking on The Athletic FC podcast, journalist David Ornstein has shared an update on Everton's situation heading towards the January transfer window.
"They only want to sell to the right buyer. They want it to be a custodian who can take the club to the next level, and in the meantime, they remain fully committed. Nothing changes. They'll be ready to invest in the January transfer market, they say, if that is a striker, which I could see coming in," Ornstein said.
The reliable reporter confirms that TFG are not 'pulling the plug' just because they are looking for new investment in the club. Ornstein understand that Everton fans will be concerned.
"They're not pulling the plug, but they are ready to go. It would appear to be, in their minds, the end of this sequence, and that will fill Everton fans with a bit of anger, a bit of concern, and a bit of "here we go again. I can't believe we're back in this position just when we thought there was a bright horizon.""
Ornstein does believe that there should also be some optimism among supporters. The Athletic journalist suggests that there is a fantastic opportunity for a new owner to take this team to the next level.
Whether TFG will actually continue to invest in Everton to the level they would have if they hadn't announced they were looking to sell remains to be seen. One positive is that they'll want Everton to be as attractive as possible for the next buyer, allowing them to get as much money as possible when they do sell.
A new buyer will want there to be foundations laid that shows the Toffees could qualify for Europe and compete for trophies soon enough, and that will undoubtedly mean investment will be needed in the playing squad.
Everton need multiple players in various positions, not just to improve the starting XI, but to build a deeper, more competitive squad. There's no doubt Moyes needs more options at full-back, while a striker to compete with Thierno Barry will be necessary going forward.
It's an interesting period approaching for Everton and their supporters, and it's in everyone's best interests that the situation is solved as soon as possible.
A sale before January feels unlikely, but hopefully TFG will back Moyes in the upcoming market.
