Everton defeat Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
We asked David Moyes to take some risks, and he did just that.
Everton secured a 3-1 victory over Newcastle at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, to book themselves a place in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup.
The Toffees will now face Fleetwood Town, who stand in the way of a semi-final place.
Everton opened the scoring after Tyrique George did well to press the opposition and force an error, before Hayden Hackney's clever pass fell into the path of James Garner. The Everton midfielder sent a curling effort towards the bottom corner, and it nestled in the back of the net.
Just before half-time, a fantastic run from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall saw him fouled in the centre of the pitch, but Thierno Barry was there to pick up the pieces. The French striker produced a phenomenal pass into the box, and Hackney was there to volley home.
After the break, Everton found their third. Dewsbury-Hall was involved once again, making a run down the left-hand side. He picked out Barry in the box, with his clever movement allowing him to escape his marker, and he took a touch before placing the ball into the top corner.
In the final minutes, a cross into the box was headed home by Dan Burn, but it was merely a consolation for the visitors.
Onto the player ratings.
Jordan Pickford - 7
Solid performance from Jordan Pickford. Made some smart saves and his distribution was also good. Been poor of late, but bounced back vs Newcastle.
Merlin Rohl - 6.5
Thought he had a really poor first half, but bounced back in the second. Some important challenges after the break, but is just a little too calm in possession which leads to sloppy mistakes.
James Tarkowski - 8
A top performance from Everton’s captain.
Won most things at the back. Not much more to say than that. Solid.
Jake O’Brien - 7
Except for the Newcastle goal, thought it was a good display from Jake O’Brien. Lots of important clearances, looked comfortable in possession despite being on his weaker side.
Vitalii Mykolenko - 8
Some crucial last-ditch defending. He’s having a really strong season, credit where it’s due. Tried to help going forward too. Great performance from him.
James Garner - 7
Took his goal really well. Don’t think he looked too great out of possession, but kept things ticking in midfield. Wasn’t his usual self in terms of winning the ball back regularly.
Hayden Hackney - 8
Exactly why he has deserved more opportunities. A goal and an assist, and could have had more. Won a lot of duels. Does go wandering a lot, but there was a bit more cover centrally in this game.
IMAGO / Focus Images Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall - 8
Looked back to his best in this game. Fantastic pass for Barry’s goal, and was absolutely everywhere. Offered us a lot more defensively than usual, playing in a deeper role, and got us up the pitch with his ball-carrying.
Tyler Dibling - 6.5
Quiet night for Tyler Dibling. Few sloppy moments, few bright ones too. We did just look more threatening down the right-hand side with him in the team, though.
Tyrique George - 6.5
Fairly similar to Dibling. Wasn’t quite at it in terms of taking players on, but this is what you get with young players.
Work-rate for the opening goal was great, though.
Thierno Barry - 8
Like Hackney, a goal and an assist for the Everton striker. Hold-up play was better, helped by getting more players around him. Showed a bit of a creative side, and took his goal very well.
