Everton face a newly promoted side at home, something they struggled with at times last season.
Newcastle put to the sword twice, lovely stuff. Coventry next up. Everton vs promoted teams has been a mixed bag, which is what last season brought to us. Let’s remember last season's promoted teams’ antics at The Hill Dickinson Stadium.
EVERTON 1-1 LEEDS UNITED, 26TH JANUARY 2026
Monday night football against Leeds happened twice last year, and not one victory for the Blues came with them.
This was, to be fair, a cagey affair. Leeds took the deserved lead after terrible defending by Everton, for Justin to smash in from the edge of the area to make it 0-1. Ex-Everton number 9 Dominic Calvert-Lewin could and should have made it 0-2 after seeing his effort bounce off the post.
The spoils ended up being shared after a lovely give-and-go to Idrissa Gana Gueye, who whipped in a ball for Thierno Barry to turn home. He celebrated about five times in front of the South Stand, but who cared? It was a forgettable game, to be honest.
EVERTON 2-0 BURNLEY, 3RD MARCH 2026
Another midweek game, but this time ending with a win. Burnley were awful here, not even hyperbole; one of the worst teams to come to Hill Dickinson last season. James Tarkowski started proceedings with a great header off a cross from James Garner.
Dewsbury Hall made it two with a deft finish at the back post to make sure the points went to Everton. Another highlight was Jordan Pickford making last-ditch saves at the end of the game, becoming the norm that last season.
EVERTON 1-3 SUNDERLAND, 17TH MAY 2026
Everton were in pole position for Europe at this point. Beat Sunderland and it was on. Beat Sunderland? They did not.
This was an Everton completely on the beach. The Blues did go 1-0 to the good, with a goal (deflected) by Merlin Rohl for his first goal for the club. Whatever David Moyes said at Half-Time did not have any desired effect. Goals by Brobbey, Le Fee and Isidor put the Blues back down to earth and another season without Europe.
Just for good measure, Sunderland beat Everton in the FA Cup on penalties. Everton missed all 3 of their spot kicks, I will challenge you to find three worse penalties. They were awful.
So, a draw, a win and a loss. Hope to improve this against the three teams this year if we want to stake a claim for a European place.
