Everton are yet to decide whether to trigger the option to sign Tyrique George on a permanent deal from Chelsea.

Everton's recruitment last summer has been heavily scrutinised, with multiple holes remaining in the squad heading into the 2025/2026 season.

It's a familiar story for Everton supporters. Recruitment has been a major issue since the days of Farhad Moshiri, and although it feels like the Toffees are going down a different route, it's still far from perfect.

A host of players signed ahead of the season have struggled to make an impact, such as Tyler Dibling and Adam Aznou.

In January, young Tyrique George was also brought to the club, and Everton have a decision to make on the Chelsea loanee.

Everton weighing up George decision

According to a report from the BBC, Everton are still considering whether to trigger the option to sign George on a permanent deal in the summer transfer window.

George signed on loan at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in January, with the Toffees having the option to secure his signature permanently. Everton are yet to make their decision, with George's future unclear.

The England youth international's situation at Stamford Bridge could change in the coming months after Xabi Alonso arrived through the door. Despite rumours, the BBC have confirmed that Alonso is yet to speak to George about his future.

Moyes cautious on George future

Speaking on George before the end of the season, David Moyes confirmed that the club were yet to make a decision:

As the summer goes on, we'll decide what path we're going to take on both of them. We like Tyrique, obviously we like Jack [Grealish] a lot – but we've not got an answer [yet]. We've enjoyed having Tyrique here – he's been an excellent boy and his work-rate and everything has been excellent, so we're happy with him.

David Moyes on Tyrique George

It's no surprise that Everton are yet to decide whether to pursue George permanently. The 20-year-old struggled for game time since his loan move from Chelsea, starting just one Premier League game in the second half of the campaign.

George played a total of 218 minutes in England's top flight, so it's been difficult to judge him in an Everton shirt.

George has shown signs

Although his game time has been limited, and the sample size is incredibly small, George has shown signs that he's a player worth investing in. The Chelsea loanee is positive every time he gets the ball, always looking to make things happen, even if it means giving it away on multiple occasions.

Everton don't have a player who is as direct and quick off the mark as George, and at the age of 20, he still has plenty of room to grow.

Although Moyes might not trust him as much as George would have hoped, investing in the youngster long-term would be beneficial. If it emerges that George's buy option is in the region of £25m, it would be a surprise if Everton didn't bite the bullet.

Bringing George to the club on a loan deal without planning on triggering the buy option made little sense for Everton, especially with Moyes barely giving him an opportunity to impress in the second half of the season.
