Marco Silva is among the shortlist for the vacant Chelsea job according to the Telegraph. Silva’s contract at Fulham expires in June and he could leave the club as soon as then.

Tom Masters explains the situation with Marco Silva on Chelsea's shortlist for their new manager.

Marco Silva is on the shortlist for the vacant Chelsea job and the Fulham manager could join their London rivals in June.

Silva has been stalling over signing a new contract with the Cottagers and the situation remains unresolved heading into the final four matches of the season.

Fulham remain hopeful they can sign the Portuguese manager onto a new deal but they may face competition with their local rivals sniffing around.

The Blues are taking their time to bring in a new manager after sacking Liam Rosenior following a historically bad period at Stamford Bridge.

Callum McFarlane will remain at the helm for their final five matches of the season, while Chelsea continue to interview candidates and identify the perfect man for the job.

Unfortunately for Fulham fans, one of the men on the list of candidates is Silva and it is unlikely that he would turn down the opportunity to take the job should it be offered to him.

Chelsea are also looking at Andoni Iraola, who will leave Bournemouth in the summer, and Xabi Alonso who is unemployed after being sacked by Real Madrid in January.

Other managers that have been linked with the job are the likes of former Chelsea players Cesc Fabregas and Filipe Luis, while Oliver Glasner is also a contender.

According to Matt Law at the Telegraph, though, Silva, Iraola and Alonso all fit the bill as managers who meet their new criteria of managing on the biggest stage.

His article read: “Telegraph Sport first reported that Chelsea are planning to change their recent strategy following the sacking of Rosenior, and appoint a successor with top-level experience.

“Iraola and Silva have managed in the Premier League and in top overseas leagues, while Alonso has top-level experience with Bayer Leverkusen and Madrid.

“There are believed to be other, so far unnamed, candidates Chelsea are considering and the club are ready to take their time over an appointment with Calum McFarlane in interim control.

Fulham may yet still end up with Silva as their manager come August when the new season begins, they may also be in a position where he is manager and they are playing in Europe.

But, with one of the biggest clubs in the world sniffing around Silva, it is unlikely there will not be others that follow this summer.

And, let’s not forget - the only person Marco Silva not signing a new contract benefits is Marco Silva himself and he is in complete control in this situation.
