There was heartbreak for Harry Wilson and Wales as they were knocked out of the World Cup during the play-off semi-final by Bosnia and Herzegovina. Joachim Andersen will play in the play-off final though after missing Denmark's 4-0 win over North Macedonia due to suspension.

Tom Masters explains what happened in the World Cup play-off semi-finals.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup European play-off semi-finals brought about plenty of drama, tension and ultimately heartbreak or joy depending on the outcome.

With 16 teams battling it out for the final four places in the USA, Canada and Mexico this summer, it is ultra competitive to see who will be flying Stateside and who will have the summer off.

There were two Fulham players involved on the night, Harry Wilson for Wales against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Joachim Andersen for Denmark against North Macedonia.

And the two Cottagers had completely different nights.

Heartbreak for Wilson and Wales

Harry Wilson was earmarked for big things all week and had the weight of expectation pushing down on his shoulders.

There was even a full feature on BBC Sport Wales comparing Wilson to Gareth Bale as the talisman of Craig Bellamy’s current side.

And Wilson delivered the exact sort of performance that Fulham fans have become accustomed to seeing this season, striking the post with a formidable curling effort in the first half, before assisting Dan James in the second to put Wales 1-0 up.

He turned provider again for James when he hit the crossbar, which would have made it 2-0 and put Wales in control.

Alas, it was not to be that way and Bosnia hit back through 40-year-old Edin Dzeko late on.

Wilson had a brilliant chance in extra time but it was brilliantly cleared away and the game went to the dreaded penalties.

Karl Darlow saved the first Bosnia penalty and Wilson scored to give Wales an early advantage.

But penalty misses from Brennan Johnson and Neco Williams saw Wales knocked out in the cruelest fashion and put an end to their World Cup dreams for this summer.

Denmark progress with ease in Andersen’s absence

Denmark were the most comfortable winners in all eight play-off semi-finals, winning 4-0 against North Macedonia in Copenhagen.

There were concerns pre-match that their defence could be an issue, with Andersen suspended and Kasper Schmeichel, Andreas Christensen and Patrick Dorgu all injured.

But there did not need to be any worries, as Denmark had so much possession (68%) that North Macedonia only mustered three shots, none of which were bound for Mads Hermansen’s goal.

Mikel Damsgaard got the ball rolling for the Danes in the 49th minute, before two goals in two minutes from Gustav Isaksen and a Christian Norgaard strike sent them through to the final.

That will be against Czechia and Andersen will be eligible to play in that final.
