Anton Stach believes Leeds United can take encouragement from their performance against Arsenal despite suffering a narrow defeat at the Emirates Stadium, with the midfielder insisting Daniel Farke’s side showed how far they have progressed against the Premier League champions.

Leeds United midfielder Anton Stach has insisted the Whites can be proud of their progress despite falling to a 2-1 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Daniel Farke’s side looked capable of securing a positive result against the reigning Premier League champions after James Justin put Leeds ahead, but Arsenal responded with two second-half goals to turn the game around and leave the visitors empty-handed.

Having arrived in North London looking to build on their encouraging start to the campaign, Leeds were unable to maintain their advantage against one of the division’s strongest sides.

Nevertheless, Stach believes the performance demonstrated the quality and competitiveness within the Whites squad.

The Germany international was particularly encouraged by Leeds’ display during the opening 60 to 65 minutes, during which they made life difficult for Arsenal and competed well against the hosts.

Speaking after the final whistle, Stach told the media: “I think we did well today, over 60- 65 minutes. It was a really good away game. Away at Arsenal is not easy. They are one of the best teams in the world, and we competed very well.

“But the problem was that when we conceded the goal, they were on it. They wanted to win it, and they tried to attack with the crowd, with everybody. Sometimes you can’t defend everything.”

Leeds had shown resilience to remain competitive against Arsenal for much of the contest, but the hosts' quality ultimately proved decisive as they found the breakthrough in the second half.

For Stach, Arsenal's response after conceding highlighted the challenge of competing against elite opposition, particularly at a ground where the home crowd can help drive the team forward.

Despite the disappointment of defeat, the midfielder was keen to emphasise the effort Leeds had put into the performance, both tactically and physically.

“We tried everything. Sometimes it happens like this, and I think we can be proud of our progress at the moment,” he added.

“We tried to make it difficult for Arsenal. We tried everything tactically and also in terms of fighting.”

Stach highlights Leeds United's physical strengths

Leeds have sought to establish themselves as a competitive force since returning to the Premier League, with physicality and work rate central to their approach under Farke.

Against Arsenal, those qualities were evident as the Whites attempted to disrupt the hosts' rhythm and prevent them from playing through the lines with their usual fluency.

Stach believes Leeds' ability to match opponents physically is one of their key strengths, even when facing sides boasting considerably greater individual quality.

“Nearly every game in the Premier League is very physical,” he explained.

“I know that is one of our strengths: being physical, and we tried to get it on the pitch today. I think we did quite well.”

The midfielder's assessment reflects the challenge facing Leeds as they continue to adapt to the demands of the Premier League.

Competing against teams with the resources and quality of Arsenal requires sustained concentration, physical commitment and the ability to manage difficult periods within matches.

Leeds demonstrated those qualities for large spells on Saturday, but were ultimately unable to prevent the hosts from finding a way back into the contest.

Arsenal's depth and attacking quality made them a difficult opponent to contain throughout the 90 minutes, something Stach acknowledged when reflecting on the result.

“It is always hard when you play against a good-quality team. Arsenal have an amazing quality in the squad,” he said.

“But as I said, we competed well over 60-65 minutes, and we need to take the positives and our recharge and then go again.”

Leeds United must respond after Emirates disappointment

The defeat represents a frustrating outcome for Leeds, who had put themselves in a promising position before Arsenal's second-half response.

However, Stach's comments suggest the result will not undermine the confidence gained from competing with one of the Premier League's leading sides.

Instead, the midfielder wants the Whites to use the performance as a learning experience as they prepare for their next challenge.

While Leeds will be disappointed not to have taken anything from the Emirates Stadium, their ability to challenge Arsenal for much of the afternoon offers encouragement for the weeks ahead.

Farke's side will now need to recover from the physical demands of Saturday's encounter before turning their attention to their next fixture, with the focus on translating their encouraging spells of performance into points.

For Stach, the message is clear: Leeds can recognise the progress they have made without losing sight of the improvements still required.

The Whites may have left North London empty-handed, but the midfielder believes their performance against the reigning champions provides a foundation on which they can continue to build.
