Jayden Bogle’s clinical opener and a dominant first half proved just enough as Daniel Farke’s resilient side battled to a gritty draw amid missed opportunities at the Amex.

Leeds United continued their unbeaten start to the new Premier League season with a hard-earned point against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.

Jayden Bogle’s first-half opener put Daniel Farke’s side in front after a dominant opening period, with the Whites coming close on several occasions to doubling their advantage.

However, despite creating the better chances for large periods of the contest, Leeds were unable to find a second before Luka Vuskovic’s second-half header brought Brighton level.

Backed by a sold-out away end who were in fine voice throughout on the south coast, Farke made three changes to the side that drew with Brentford last weekend, with Gabriel Gudmundsson handed his first start of the campaign.

Leeds made a bright start and almost opened the scoring inside the opening stages when Noah Okafor’s clever pass released Dominic Calvert-Lewin into the Brighton penalty area.

The striker raced through before firing narrowly wide of the far post, although the assistant referee’s flag was raised for offside.

Okafor was causing problems for the hosts and soon embarked on a mazy run from halfway, twisting and turning his way towards the Brighton box before Lewis Dunk intervened and allowed goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen to gather.

The pressure continued and Leeds deservedly took the lead in the 15th minute.

After a scramble in midfield, Nico Elvedi did brilliantly to hook a cross towards Calvert-Lewin at the back post.

The Englishman powered a header towards the far corner, only for Verbruggen to produce an excellent save.

Fortunately for the visitors, the ball fell kindly for Ao Tanaka, who squared it back into the danger area for Bogle to arrive and tap home the opener.

Searching for a quickfire second, another delivery from the right caused Brighton further problems.

James Justin rose highest to meet the cross and glanced a header towards goal, but a Brighton shirt was on hand to clear.

Leeds were firmly on top and went desperately close to extending their advantage shortly afterwards.

Calvert-Lewin profited from a loose ball and raced through on goal, rounding Verbruggen before seeing his effort denied by Dunk, who had recovered brilliantly to hook the ball off the line.

From the resulting set piece, the ball fell to Tanaka, who drilled a fierce effort into the ground.

The shot bounced up and cannoned back off the crossbar as Brighton survived another huge scare.

The hosts finally began to threaten as Pascal Groß tried his luck from distance, arrowing a rasping drive narrowly over James Trafford’s crossbar.

Shortly afterwards, Trafford was called upon to make his first meaningful save of the afternoon, standing firm to keep out a Diego Gómez volley.

Leeds remained in control for much of the opening 45 minutes and went into the interval deservedly ahead.

HALF TIME: Brighton & Hove Albion 0-1 Leeds United

The Whites emerged from the break unchanged and almost doubled their lead in the early stages of the second half.

The ball fell kindly for Anton Stach inside the area, but Verbruggen reacted brilliantly, throwing out an outstretched boot to deny the Germany international from close range.

Tanaka then thought he had got his name on the scoresheet himself after latching onto a Stach free-kick and volleying home.

However, celebrations were cut short once again as the assistant referee’s flag was raised for offside.

Brighton looked for a response and worked the ball into the middle for Groß, who fired beyond the far post as the hosts struggled to seriously trouble Farke’s defence.

Leeds made their first changes just after the hour mark, with Jaka Bijol and Brenden Aaronson introduced for Bogle and the hard-working Okafor.

Verbruggen was keeping Brighton in the contest and once again came to the hosts’ rescue when Justin’s drive from a narrow angle was brilliantly parried away.

The move had been crafted by Stach and Calvert-Lewin, with Leeds continuing to look the more dangerous side despite Brighton growing into the game.

As the contest became increasingly stretched, Charalampos Kostoulas finally found some space deep inside United territory, but his tame effort was comfortably gathered by Trafford.

Brighton would, however, find their equaliser with 19 minutes remaining.

Luka Vuskovic rose highest inside the Leeds penalty area and powered a header beyond Trafford to bring the hosts level.

Brighton 1-1 Leeds.

Farke immediately turned to his bench in search of a winning goal, introducing Lukas Nmecha and Harry Wilson for Calvert-Lewin and Tanaka.

Nmecha was quickly involved, receiving the ball from Aaronson before seeing his effort charged down by a Brighton defender.

With the game entering its final stages, both sides pushed forward in search of the decisive third goal.

Brighton had a huge opportunity when Groß found himself in space from close range, but the midfielder could only lash his effort over the crossbar.

At the other end, Nmecha came within inches of restoring Leeds’ advantage, sending a low effort narrowly wide of the far post.

Neither side could find the all-important winner, however, with Stuart Attwell eventually bringing an entertaining contest to an end.

The point means Leeds maintain their unbeaten start to the new Premier League campaign, although Farke and his players may feel they had enough chances to take all three points back to West Yorkshire.
