Fresh off a grueling training week, a youthful Whites side prioritized match fitness and integration over the result as several debutants faced a clinical Wrexham in Florida.
Daniel Farke insisted there were plenty of positives to take from Leeds United’s opening pre-season outing, despite seeing his side fall to a 3-2 defeat against Wrexham in Florida.
The Whites began their preparations for the 2026/27 Premier League campaign with an entertaining contest at Raymond James Stadium, where first-half goals from Joël Piroe and Sean Longstaff were ultimately cancelled out by an impressive Wrexham display.
Although disappointed by the result, Farke believes the performance provided exactly what Leeds needed at this stage of pre-season, with fitness and squad integration taking priority over the scoreline.
Farke pleased despite defeat
Speaking to LUTV after the match, the Leeds head coach admitted he is never happy to lose, but stressed there was little to criticise about his players’ efforts.
“I am always struggling once there is a loss to be in a good mood afterwards, if I am honest.
“But today, no complaints. We played against Wrexham who played a relatively strong side, a few weeks ahead in their preparation. For us, we gave many, many debuts away today, also full debuts.”
Several players made their first appearances in Leeds colours, with Farke revealing his only real disappointment was that those making their debuts were unable to celebrate with a victory.
“I am just a bit sad and feel a bit especially for our young lads, that they couldn’t celebrate their debut and their full debut with a win.”
Leeds created enough to win
Despite the defeat, Farke felt Leeds were the better side for large spells and believed the result did not accurately reflect the balance of the game.
The Whites dominated possession and created numerous opportunities but were punished by a clinical Wrexham side that took their chances.
“If you have a look at the game, normally we should have won this game. We had more possession, we had more chances, should have scored also more goals than them but they were effective.”
The German also pointed to the demanding workload his squad has faced throughout the opening week of pre-season, explaining that fatigue was always likely to play a part.
“You could feel today, lads were tired. We have trained the whole week, more or less two sessions per day. We had even a session this morning and to play without many important players so for that, no complaints.”
Building foundations for the Premier League season
With Leeds back in the Premier League, Farke emphasised that the primary objective of pre-season is preparing the squad physically rather than focusing solely on results.
He believes the intensive training programme now will pay dividends over the course of the campaign, just as it did during last season’s successful promotion push.
“Pre-season you build a foundation for the whole season. It is most important that you do lots of physical work. You need this endurance, this fitness level during the whole season.
“We have proven last season how important this is. You have to integrate the new players. And the best way is always like once you are 24/7 together and you have lots of communication.
“We need, of course, to work on our game. We had many, many good pre-seasons in the last years and yeah, it was quite often then also the basement for a really good season. Hopefully we can also keep working hard and for that we also have a successful season ahead.”
Farke hails travelling Leeds supporters
Despite the result, Leeds were backed by a vocal travelling support in Florida, something that once again left a lasting impression on the manager.
Farke admitted he was disappointed he could not reward those supporters with a victory but praised their unwavering backing throughout the evening.
“Unbelievable. So, this club is really second to none.
“And for that, I am a bit disappointed that we couldn’t give them for their great support also even a bit more to cheer. But even after the game, they were in a good mood.
“Our supporters are the best in the world and really second to none. It is a joy to work for this massive club and to make them hopefully happy with better results and also hopefully a successful season.”
While the result will be quickly forgotten, Farke’s message was clear. The performance, valuable minutes for new faces, and the physical work completed throughout the week matter far more than the scoreline at this early stage of Leeds United’s preparations, with the Whites now turning their attention to the next fixture of their United States tour.
