Ethan Ampadu delivered another captain’s performance against Tottenham Hotspur. After an exceptional season back in the Premier League, Leeds United should already be working on a new contract for one of Daniel Farke’s most important players.
When Leeds United needed leadership most this season, Ethan Ampadu delivered.
Again and again.
The Leeds captain produced another outstanding display in the 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur, earning man of the match after a performance that perfectly summed up why he has become one of the most important players at the football club. Calm under pressure, aggressive in the tackle, dominant in the air and composed in possession, Ampadu was everywhere as Leeds battled back from behind in North London.
And after the season he has had back in the Premier League, Leeds should already be looking to reward him with a new contract.
There are players who wear the captain’s armband, and then there are players who genuinely lead a football club. Ampadu falls firmly into the second category.
At times earlier this season, Leeds looked vulnerable. Injuries, tactical changes and inconsistency left Daniel Farke searching for answers, while criticism around the team grew louder with every disappointing result. Questions were being asked about identity, mentality and whether Leeds genuinely had enough quality to survive in the Premier League.
Yet throughout all of that uncertainty, Ampadu remained one of the few constants.
Whether playing in midfield or stepping into defence, his reliability never disappeared. Week after week, he set the standard for effort, discipline and professionalism. Even when Leeds struggled collectively, Ampadu rarely did individually.
The Welsh international has developed into the heartbeat of this Leeds side.
What makes Ampadu so valuable is not just his versatility, but the mentality he brings to the team. Leeds are a far calmer and more organised side when he plays. His communication is constant, his reading of the game is exceptional, and his ability to break up attacks has been crucial in Leeds climbing away from relegation danger.
The recent switch to a back three has only highlighted his importance even further. Ampadu has become the player who holds everything together, allowing others around him to play with more freedom. Anton Stach’s rise in midfield, the improved defensive structure and Leeds’ stronger away form have all been helped by the captain’s presence and intelligence on the pitch.
Against Spurs, his influence was impossible to ignore. Leeds were under pressure for large parts of the first half and struggled to gain control of the game, but Ampadu continuously kept the side together. He won tackles, intercepted dangerous attacks and showed the composure Leeds needed in difficult moments. As the game became more chaotic in the second half, he looked like the one player completely unfazed by the occasion.
That is the sign of a real captain.
There is also a maturity to his performances now that perhaps was not fully there earlier in his career. At 25, Ampadu looks like a player entering his peak years, and Leeds should be making sure those years are spent at Elland Road.
In modern football, finding leaders is difficult. Finding leaders who are technically gifted, tactically intelligent and capable of playing multiple positions at Premier League level is even harder. Ampadu gives Leeds flexibility tactically, but also emotional stability within games. Teams that survive and establish themselves in the Premier League need players they can build around, and Ampadu feels like one of those players.
Supporters already adore him because he represents everything they want to see from a captain. Commitment, fight, professionalism and consistency. He sets standards, and after helping lead Leeds back into the Premier League before captaining them to safety, he has become one of the faces of the club’s rebuild under Farke.
If Leeds genuinely want to establish themselves back in the Premier League long-term, keeping players like Ampadu should be one of the club’s biggest priorities this summer.
Because seasons change quickly in football. Interest will come. Bigger clubs will notice his performances.
And Leeds should make sure their captain’s future is secured before anybody else gets the chance.
