Elland Road officials have secured a crucial breakthrough for the Eintracht Frankfurt winger, finally clearing the way for the Italian international to finalise his anticipated Serie A return.

Leeds United have reportedly reached an agreement in principle to sign Eintracht Frankfurt winger Jean-Mattéo Bahoya, with Wilfried Gnonto now set to complete his proposed move to Fiorentina.

The developments come during a hectic final few hours of the summer transfer window, with Leeds working to strengthen their attacking options before allowing Gnonto to leave Elland Road.

Earlier on deadline day, The Athletic's Seb Stafford-Bloor reported that Leeds were exploring a move for Bahoya, with negotiations ongoing between the Premier League club and Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Whites were keen to find a resolution before the 11 pm transfer deadline, while sources at Elland Road had maintained throughout the day that Gnonto would not be allowed to leave unless a replacement was secured.

Bahoya now appears to be that replacement.

Leeds reach agreement for Bahoya

Following the initial report from The Athletic, transfer journalist Santi Aouna reported that an agreement in principle had been reached between Leeds and Eintracht Frankfurt for Bahoya.

Aouna also reported that Leeds had reached an agreement with the player over personal terms, with a medical scheduled as the 20-year-old moves closer to becoming the latest addition to Daniel Farke's squad.

Bahoya has been on Leeds' radar throughout the transfer window and has also attracted interest from elsewhere.

Hull City were reported to have pursued a move for the French winger earlier in the window, but Bahoya declined the opportunity to join the Premier League newcomers.

Leeds have instead moved to bring the Eintracht Frankfurt attacker to West Yorkshire as they look to add another option to their forward line.

Should the deal be completed, Bahoya would arrive at Elland Road as a direct replacement for Gnonto, whose future has dominated much of deadline day.

Fiorentina receive final approval to register Gnonto

Gnonto travelled to Florence on Monday as he awaited a final decision over his proposed move to Fiorentina.

However, Leeds made it clear that permission for the Italian to travel did not guarantee that the transfer would ultimately be sanctioned.

The club's stance was that Gnonto would only be allowed to complete the move if Leeds were able to bring in another attacking option before allowing him to leave.

That situation now appears to have been resolved.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Fiorentina have received final approval from Leeds to register Gnonto, paving the way for the Italian international to complete his move to Serie A.

The timing of the update comes shortly after reports emerged that Leeds had reached an agreement in principle for Bahoya, suggesting United have moved to secure their replacement before giving the green light for Gnonto's departure.

With the Italian transfer window closing earlier than the Premier League's, there had been pressure on both clubs to reach a final resolution.

A busy end to the window for Leeds

It has been a hectic deadline day for Leeds, with the club continuing to reshape their squad in the closing hours of the window.

Gnonto's departure will bring an end to his time at Elland Road, while Bahoya looks increasingly likely to arrive as Leeds' new attacking addition.

The focus will now turn to completing the final stages of Bahoya's proposed transfer, with a medical reportedly scheduled and agreements already reached in principle with both Eintracht Frankfurt and the player.

If the move is completed in time, Leeds will have managed to replace one highly-rated young winger with another during the final hours of the transfer window.

For Farke and his recruitment team, the next few hours could prove decisive as they look to ensure the squad is fully prepared for the remainder of the Premier League campaign.
