Leeds United Women continued their excellent start to the season with a 2-0 victory over Norton & Stockton Ancients, with goals from Amy Woodruff and Drew Greene securing a 10th consecutive win and keeping Simon Wood’s side top of the FA Women’s National League Division One North.
Leeds United Women maintained their position at the top of the FA Women’s National League Division One North after recording a comfortable 2-0 victory over Norton & Stockton Ancients at the BD Community Stadium on Sunday.
Goals from Amy Woodruff and Drew Greene in the opening 32 minutes gave Simon Wood’s side control of the contest, with the Whites creating several further opportunities to extend their advantage without adding to their tally after the break.
The victory marked Leeds’ 10th consecutive win in all competitions this season, providing further momentum ahead of next week’s meeting with second-placed AFC Fylde Women.
There was one change to the starting XI following the previous week’s victory over Stockton Town Ladies, with league top goalscorer Woodruff returning to the side in place of Abi Coley, who dropped to the bench.
Woodruff immediately demonstrated her influence in attack, delivering a clever scooped pass over the Norton defence towards Monique Watson, whose run required an intervention from the visitors’ backline.
The pair combined again shortly afterwards, with Woodruff releasing Watson in behind, although her attempted pull-back was intercepted before Leeds could turn the opportunity into a clear sight of goal.
The hosts continued to press and were rewarded in the 14th minute when Woodruff opened the scoring.
Receiving the ball to the right of the penalty area, the forward lifted it over her marker before attempting to find the target.
Her initial effort took a deflection and looped towards the goal line, but Woodruff reacted quickest to beat the goalkeeper to the ball and tap home.
Leeds almost doubled their advantage immediately, with Woodruff racing in behind the Norton defence and aiming for the far corner, only to see her effort strike the post.
Alayna Millard was next to threaten, being played through on goal by Darcie Greene before forcing a smart save from Norton goalkeeper Laura Wareham.
Watson also went close to extending the lead, finding space on the edge of the area and shooting towards the near post, but Wareham reacted well to push the effort away from danger.
The Whites eventually found their second goal in the 32nd minute, with Drew Greene finishing off an excellent move down the left.
Darcie Greene drove forward down the flank before delivering a pass across the face of goal, leaving her teammate with an empty net to convert and give Leeds a deserved two-goal advantage.
Leeds continued to search for a third before half-time, with Brittany Sanderson coming particularly close.
Her well-struck effort ricocheted off the post and fell to Drew Greene, but Norton recovered quickly to crowd out the follow-up attempt.
Despite creating further opportunities, the Whites were unable to add to their advantage before the interval, heading into half-time with a 2-0 lead.
Norton attempted to respond immediately after the restart, with Bianca Owens trying her luck from around 30 yards, although her effort sailed over the crossbar.
Leeds soon threatened at the other end as Chloe Dixon cut inside from the left and aimed for the near post, but Wareham was again equal to the effort.
The hosts continued to create chances as they looked to put the result beyond doubt. Sanderson collected a partially cleared ball on the edge of the penalty area and struck towards goal, with a deflection wrong-footing Wareham before the effort agonisingly crashed against the crossbar.
Around the hour mark, Wood turned to his substitutes and introduced Ava Spencer-Smith, marking the forward’s first appearance since returning to Leeds from Bradford City Women.
Spencer-Smith had arrived following an impressive start to the campaign, having scored five goals for Bradford, and her introduction added another attacking option as Leeds looked to increase their advantage.
Watson came close to making it three with 25 minutes remaining, turning sharply inside the penalty area before shooting, but another deflection sent her effort narrowly wide of the target.
Captain Shauna Legge almost added a fourth goal of the afternoon for the Whites as the game entered its closing stages.
Rising highest to meet a corner at the far post, the defender directed her header narrowly wide.
Leeds continued to push for another goal during the closing minutes, but Norton managed to prevent further damage as the hosts saw out the remainder of the contest.
The final whistle confirmed a 2-0 victory for Leeds, extending their winning streak to 10 matches in all competitions and keeping them at the summit of the Division One North table.
Attention now turns to a crucial meeting with AFC Fylde Women next week, with the top-two clash providing another opportunity for Wood’s side to strengthen their position in the promotion race.
