The academy graduate and Championship winner departs Elland Road after 224 appearances, bringing his storied two-spell tenure to a close to bolster Michael Carrick’s defensive options.
Leeds United have confirmed that Sam Byram has left the club following the expiration of his contract at Elland Road, with the experienced defender joining Sky Bet Championship side Middlesbrough.
Byram leaves West Yorkshire having played a significant role in the club’s history across two separate spells.
A product of the Leeds academy and a boyhood supporter, the 32-year-old departs as one of the most popular members of the squad both on and off the pitch.
Having progressed through the various age groups at Thorp Arch, Byram made his senior debut for Leeds in August 2012.
It did not take long for the young full-back to establish himself as an important member of the first team, with his performances during his breakthrough campaign earning widespread praise.
Byram’s impressive debut season was recognised when he collected both the Goal of the Year and Player of the Year awards, underlining just how quickly he had made an impact at Elland Road.
His first spell with the club eventually came to an end when he moved to West Ham United, before subsequent spells with Nottingham Forest and Norwich City.
However, Leeds remained close to Byram’s heart and he returned to his boyhood club in 2023.
The defender immediately became a valuable option for Daniel Farke, making 37 appearances across the 2023/24 campaign.
His versatility and experience made him an important part of a Leeds side competing at the top end of the Championship.
Byram continued to play an important role the following season, featuring 39 times as Leeds enjoyed a historic campaign.
Among his most memorable moments was a stunning volley against Luton Town, while his contribution helped Farke’s side secure a club-record 100 points and lift the Championship title.
Last season brought a new challenge as Leeds returned to the Premier League.
While his opportunities were more limited, Byram’s experience and influence within the dressing room remained invaluable as the Whites adapted to life back in the top flight and secured an impressive mid-table finish.
His contribution also extended beyond what happened on the pitch.
Byram has remained closely connected to the Leeds community throughout his career and regularly supported initiatives through the Leeds United Foundation.
His commitment to the local area further strengthened his reputation as someone who understood what representing Leeds United meant.
Across his two spells, Byram made 224 appearances for the club, scoring 13 goals.
He leaves with the Championship title to his name, alongside his Goal of the Year and Player of the Year accolades from his breakthrough campaign.
Most importantly, Byram departs having helped Leeds return to the Premier League and establish themselves back in the top flight.
His move to Middlesbrough represents the beginning of a new chapter, but his contribution to Leeds United will not be forgotten.
For a player who came through the academy, represented his boyhood club with distinction and remained connected to the community throughout his career, Byram’s departure marks the end of a memorable era.
Leeds United will now wish Byram every success at Middlesbrough, while thanking him for his dedication, professionalism and commitment during two spells in the famous white shirt.
