From record-breaking fees and Championship shutouts to European nights and World Cup heroics, discover the elite pedigree Manchester City’s rising star brings to the Elland Road goal.
Leeds United have shattered their transfer record to sign James Trafford from Manchester City, landing one of England's brightest young goalkeepers ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
At just 23 years old, Trafford already boasts Premier League, Champions League and international experience, while arriving at Elland Road with an impressive list of individual honours.
Here are eight things you should know about Leeds' new number one.
1. He's Leeds' record signing
Trafford arrives in a deal worth £40 million plus add-ons, making him the most expensive signing in Leeds United's history.
The fee also makes him the most expensive British goalkeeper ever, eclipsing the previous record set for a goalkeeper from the UK.
2. History has repeated itself
This isn't the first time Leeds have broken the British transfer record for a goalkeeper.
Back in 1996, the Whites paid a record fee to sign Nigel Martyn from Crystal Palace.
Martyn went on to make 273 appearances for the club and is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in Leeds' history.
Fittingly, the former England international welcomed Trafford to Elland Road on the day his transfer was announced.
3. He rewrote the Championship record books
Trafford enjoyed one of the greatest goalkeeping seasons in Championship history with Burnley.
During the 2024/25 campaign, he went over 1,000 minutes without conceding a goal and kept 12 consecutive clean sheets, setting a new Championship record.
Burnley conceded just 16 league goals all season, the fewest ever recorded in an English Football League campaign.
4. He already has silverware at the highest level
After returning to Manchester City, Trafford played a role in Pep Guardiola's squad during the 2025/26 season.
He started both the EFL Cup Final and FA Cup Final as City completed a domestic cup double, adding two major honours to his growing CV before arriving at Elland Road.
5. Champions League experience at 23
Despite his age, Trafford has already experienced European football.
The goalkeeper made his UEFA Champions League debut for Manchester City during the 2025/26 campaign, adding continental experience to an already impressive résumé before joining Leeds.
6. International success has followed him throughout his career
Trafford first captured the attention of football supporters across Europe with England Under-21s.
He became the first goalkeeper to complete an entire UEFA European Under-21 Championship without conceding a goal, before saving a stoppage-time penalty and rebound in the final against Spain to secure the trophy.
Since then, he has progressed to the senior England squad and was part of the Three Lions group that reached the semi-finals of this summer's FIFA World Cup.
7. Leeds know exactly what they're getting
Daniel Farke doesn't need introducing to Trafford.
The pair came up against each other during the Championship promotion race when Trafford starred for Burnley, with the goalkeeper helping Scott Parker's side earn promotion alongside Leeds.
Trafford has since admitted he was hugely impressed by Leeds' development under Farke and believes the club is continuing to move in the right direction.
8. He's entering his prime years
Although Trafford has already achieved more than many players twice his age, he is still only 23.
Goalkeepers often reach their peak later than outfield players, meaning Leeds could have secured their first-choice goalkeeper for the next decade if Trafford fulfils his enormous potential.
With Premier League experience, England caps, major honours already on his CV and his best years still ahead of him, Leeds believe they have signed one of the country's brightest goalkeeping talents as they continue building under Daniel Farke.
