Here is how each Liverpool player performed out of 10 against Arsenal. Find out who stood out at Anfield and who underdelivered against the champions.

Liverpool fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal as Andoni Iraola's side were brought back down to reality by the reigning champions.

A mistake from Alisson Becker gave the ball back to the Gunners high up the pitch, with a late run around the outside from Declan Rice, who pulled the ball back to Kai Havertz, who tapped it into an empty net.

Despite a barrage of chances and opportunities for Liverpool, not a single one was on target, and it allowed Arsenal to leave Anfield with a win for the first time in 14 years.

Here are our player ratings (out of 10) following this narrow defeat.

Related stories

Alisson Becker - 6/10

His error when playing out from the back led to Arsenal scoring their goal, but the Brazilian goalkeeper did make a crucial save in the second half to keep the deficit at one.

Milos Kerkez - 7/10

We saw a lot more of what Kerkez can offer going forward in this team today, with the Hungarian able to put in several high-quality deliveries that unfortunately lacked the end product needed.

Virgil van Dijk - 7.5/10

Several key interceptions and blocks when the away side came forward, and was a target man up front for the final 10 minutes or so as Iraola's side chased an equaliser.

Jeremy Jacquet - 7/10

Helped keep the chances Arsenal had to a minimum, but he and Van Dijk could have done more to prevent the cross from Declan Rice, who was outstanding all game, from reaching Kai Havertz for his goal.

Ronald Araujo - 7/10

More of the forward runs came from the other flank, with Araujo often going into the box waiting for crosses, rather than putting them into the danger area himself.

Trey Nyoni - 6.5/10

Once he grew into the game, he once again showed his composure on the ball, dropping into the middle of the defence when in possession and getting the Reds ticking.

Alexis Mac Allister - 6.5/10

Question marks will be raised over who should have been tracking Declan Rice on the Arsenal goal, and he had Liverpool's biggest chance of the game via a header just inside the box that sailed over the crossbar.

Bradley Barcola - 7/10

Liverpool's most dangerous attacker, but in a game that lacked the finishing touch, more would have been expected from the £123 million forward.

Florian Wirtz - 6.5/10

A quiet game from Wirtz, who was man-marked out of the game by the Gunners' midfield, and when he did get on the ball, he was pushed off it quite easily.

Cody Gakpo - 6/10

Back-to-back underwhelming showings from the Dutchman, and unlike Alexander Isak after his return from injury a few weeks ago, Gakpo is yet to find his rhythm again.

Alexander Isak - 6/10

In a game with plenty of balls into the box, many would have thought that the Swedish striker would thrive, but he was never in the right place at the right time.

He could have had a penalty, which Van Dijk and Iraola have said it should have been one, but his goalscoring streak came to an end today.

Substitutes:

Dominik Szoboszlai - 6/10

Upon his return from injury, Szoboszlai got a solid half an hour into the tank ahead of a tough European away day midweek.

But we seemed to lose a little control when Nyoni made way for him, and it could be a concern going forward now that LFC's number eight has returned.

Rio Ngumoha - 6.5/10

The 18-year-old came on and showed his usual skill and energy, but like the other forwards around him, lacked a clear-cut chance against a stubborn Arsenal defence.

Kostas Tsimikas - 5.5/10

Had very little to do defensively, but offered fresh legs at a time when the game was in Liverpool's control.

Victor Munoz - 6/10

Coming on as a right-back, Munoz found himself playing as another right winger for most of his time on the pitch. He could have had a goal had he connected with a header better in the six-yard box.

Lewis Koumas - 5/10

Did very little when he came on, and with the Reds camped outside of the opposition box, he didn't have the space in behind to use as well.

Author's Verdict - Player of The Match - Virgil van Dijk

While he could have done more on the Arsenal goal, it wasn't his fault in the main, and for the remainder of the game, he was crucial to stopping Arsenal from doubling or tripling their lead.

The skipper was always in the right place, ready to cut out passing lanes, pressing high up the pitch and making vital last-minute tackles to prevent big opportunities for the visitors.
