Wednesday night marks the opening night of LFC's 2026/27 Champions League campaign and Andoni Iraola's first game in management in the competition, so no doubt it will be a special night for him.
REUTERS/David KleinIraola will know that the task at hand is a tricky one, with a visit from Diego Simeone's side never an easy 90 minutes for any team, and as proven last season, games against Atletico Madrid have the potential to have drama, tension, and last- minute winners.
Liverpool 3-2 Atletico Madrid (17th September 2025)
These two sides have a very recent history with one another, with them facing off in the last Champions League campaign at Anfield, with the Reds edging out a five-goal thriller in Merseyside, ending with a Virgil van Dijk header in the 93rd minute to send the home crowd wild.
This game was filled with drama from minute one, ranging from Liverpool going two goals up inside 6 minutes to Diego Simeone having an argument with a fan and being sent off; this match had it all.
REUTERS/Marcelo Del PozoAndoni Iraola will be hoping for a much more straightforward evening on Wednesday, and will be looking to build upon a strong showing in their most recent outing away to Ipswich Town.
Last Time Out: Ipswich Vs Liverpool
The Anfield-based side got their first win of the season last time out, courtesy of goals from Alexander Isak, set up brilliantly by Cody Gakpo both times, meaning Iraola's side left Portman Road with all three points, a clean sheet, and a very complete performance, with a 2-0 win being thoroughly deserved.
Reuters/Lee Smith The first half was all about the attacking side of the team's game, with the likes of Gakpo and Isak looking sharp, focused, and on the exact same wavelength. In the second half came the Ipswich response, and the Reds were forced to show the other side of their game by defending well, staying compact, and not making any individual errors, as we had seen in the previous two league games.
Fans will be looking to see much of the same from Liverpool, but they will be facing a much tougher test in Atletico Madrid.
Atletico Madrid's Form
Going into this fixture, Atletico Madrid have played four league games, winning two, drawing one, and losing their most recent game 3-0 away to Athletic Bilbao.
Atletico Madrid will not only want to right the wrongs from last season's defeat to Liverpool, but they will also be looking to put in a much better performance for their travelling fans at Anfield.
