Liverpool are preparing to face Nottingham Forest at Anfield this weekend, in what will be Liverpool's new boss Andoni Iraola's first competitive game at the home of LFC. It's a game that promises to be quite the spectacle, as fans look to see the Liverpool players beginning to thrive under Iraola's style of football.

But how did the Reds perform in their opening game of the new season?

Last Time Out: Newcastle Vs Liverpool

LFC kicked off their Premier League season with a difficult away trip to St James Park, as they took on Newcastle in a match full of emotion and containing drama until the very end.

After both sides paid touching tributes to the late great Kevin Keegan, the focus then shifted to the players on the pitch, most notably Alexander Isak, who was booed and jeered every time he got hold of the ball by the Newcastle fans. 

But Liverpool's star striker would fail to have the desired impact on their game, and neither did Florian Wirtz, who was substituted around the 60 minute mark. 

The Reds would take a point from this game, after Victor Munoz won a penalty in the dying seconds of the game, in which Dominik Szoboszlai converted emphatically, to snatch a 2-2 draw in a challenging Premier League opener for LFC.

But there is still work to do for Andoni Iraola in getting the most out of his star attackers, as well as sorting out the Reds weak defensive structure that was brutally exposed by Newcastle's forward line on Sunday afternoon.

The squad available to Andoni Iraola remains relatively similar to match day one, with Iraola saying in his press conference yesterday that Federico Chiesa will remain out of this game, due to a small injury in his back, picked up against Como in the Reds final set of pre-season fixtures.

However, Harvey Elliott's absence from the squad last time out was explained slightly differently by Iraola:

"In Harvey's case, he's trying...but still, I prefer other options. It's another new week, new chances for everyone; they need to keep on that mentality."

So clearly Elliott is not being favoured by Iraola at the moment, and with less than a week until the transfer window slams shut, the chances of a Harvey Elliott departure is becoming increasingly likely, with Napoli and Lazio reportedly interested.

Apart from this, the squad remains the same, with long term absentees Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni still out, and Joe Gomez likely to not be back in time from his injury to feature in this game.

Nottingham Forest Team News

Nottingham Forest are now under new management, following the disappointing season last time around, with Oliver Glasner now the man in charge at The City Ground. Forest have lost their first two competitive games under Glasner, both being against Leeds United, one in the league and the other in the Carabao Cup.

So they will be looking to get their season going by claiming a massive win against Liverpool at Anfield this weekend. 

The likes of Morgan Gibbs White and former Reds player Neco Williams will be assessed after both having injuries going into this game, and new £50 million striker Liam Delap could make his Nottingham Forest debut this Saturday.
