Andoni Iraola believes Liverpool’s success next season will depend on the strength of the entire squad rather than just his starting XI, with the new Reds boss warning injuries and fixture congestion are inevitable.

Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has stressed the importance of squad depth ahead of a campaign he believes will test every player at the club.

Speaking during his first press conference since taking charge at Anfield, Iraola admitted the demands of competing across multiple competitions mean he cannot rely on a small core of players.

Instead, he expects every member of his squad to play an important role throughout the season.

“I think it’s a big challenge for me and a big change.
“Most weeks we have a midweek game. It’s a great opportunity for the players. I loved these seasons as a player because you were playing a lot.”

The comments offer an insight into how Liverpool could approach the remainder of the transfer window.

While supporters continue to debate where reinforcements are needed, Iraola’s remarks suggest he values having genuine competition throughout the squad rather than relying on the same players week after week.

Tough winter ahead

The Liverpool head coach also identified the festive period as one of the biggest challenges awaiting his side.

“We can go through those months, December, January, they are very hard.
“We have to arrive ready for those situations.”

Liverpool have often seen their title ambitions shaped during the winter months, with fixture congestion placing huge demands on the squad.

For Iraola, managing minutes and keeping players fresh could prove just as important as tactical preparation.

His first press conference may have focused on philosophy and style, but one message was equally clear: if Liverpool are to compete on every front, it will take far more than just their strongest starting XI.
