Off the back of two successive draws to begin the season, Liverpool are back on the road as they travel to Suffolk and take on newly promoted Ipswich Town in an 8pm (BST) kick-off at Portman Road.
Prior to this, Andoni Iraola has spoken to the press about a range of different topics, from the arrival and availability of Bradley Barcola to the importance of versatility throughout his squad, so here is everything you need to know from the head coach's press conference:
On Bradley Barcola's Availability
Unsurprisingly, the first question posed to Iraola was regarding Liverpool's star summer signing, Bradley Barcola. He was asked how happy he was that the club had completed this signing and whether the French forward would be available to feature in tomorrow's game:
Reuters/Sam Navarro“We are very happy with Bradley; it was our priority to sign a very, very good player in those positions. He has come also with the right mentality. I like that he wanted Liverpool a lot. He wanted to come here. It's a good first sign, and being the player he is, he has come with the willingness to help us.”
“He is playing well for us and if everything goes well in training today he will definitely be available for us tomorrow.”
The head coach was then pushed on whether fans can expect to see Barcola start against Ipswich tomorrow:
“Good question. I see him in a good place. He has trained for us, it's true he hasn't had minutes in pre-season. He has been training and it's a decision we have to make. But we have to consider he hasn't had minutes in pre-season games.”
On Cody Gakpo Staying at The Club
Another major talking point in the closing days of the window was Cody Gakpo remaining an LFC player, after the club turned down an offer from Manchester City for the Dutch winger.
REUTERS/Scott Heppell Iraola said:
“My relationship with Cody has been very honest from the beginning. He has played very well for us so far. He was always aware of the situation in the market, we were constantly talking, I hope we can keep him at the same level."
"He is in a good place physically and mentally and I'm very happy to pick him.”
On Squad Balance, Particularly In Forward Areas
After the Merseyside club failed to bring in a naturally right-sided winger, despite making bids for both Ismaila Sarr and Yankuba Minteh, Iraola was asked whether he believes he has enough balance within his attacking line, given that on paper he has no players naturally suited to playing on the right wing:
“We prefer at the end, to have the best players rather than players specifically for that position. I'm used at other teams to demand wingers to play on both sides. We've played with Rio and Cody now on the right, probably most of the wingers play on the left, but I've seen them good on the right.”
He was also pressed on whether he felt Bradley Barcola could also feature on the right- hand side:
“Bradley is very open and can play on the left or the right. At Lyon, he sometimes played on the right."
"It depends on the match-ups, but I'm happy with the wingers we have, and we are going to be able to cope on the right.”
On High Expectations
Asked if he felt the expectations to achieve this season are heightened with the arrival of Bradley Barcola for £123 million, off the back of last summer where the club spent in excess of £450 million:
Reuters/Sam Navarro/File Photo“We can't put pressure on the players to perform because of their price, because we've seen how much players have cost at other teams this summer. Once he is our player, he is our player.”
On the Feeling of Drawing the Opening Two Games of the Season
Iraola was then quizzed on the frustration of not winning in a competitive game as Liverpool's head coach yet:
“Definitely. If you don't win, you are frustrated. It's only two games, but we need to win. This game tomorrow, the first two games weeks are the most difficult, but I'm much more comfortable now the market is closed, and we know who we are."
"We have to perform and do our job.”
On Ipswich and Their Start to the Season
“Ipswich are a team in terms of they won their first game at home. Even the other day, the first half, they were the better team until United got the 2-1 and the game went open."
"We have to be ready, give our best.”
On the importance of Dominik Szoboszlai
Questioned on Dominik Szoboszlai featuring more as a right back this campaign and if he had a conversation with the Hungarian international about playing that role:
“I haven't found any situation where a player has said he doesn't want to play in a position. We have discussions, but everyone wants to help. If we have to play Dom as a right winger, as a right-back or a midfielder, he wants to help the team first.”
REUTERS/Scott HeppellAlso stressing the importance of versatility throughout the squad:
“We have some injuries now, and we need the versatility of the players, players like Dom. Even in the game, they have to change positions.”
On the Reaction to Going Behind in Games
In both of the opening two Premier League games, the Reds have been behind in both and have had to find a way to fight for a point, and while Iraola praised his side in this aspect, he highlighted that they can't keep waiting until they concede in order to play better:
“Reaction is a positive sign, but I focus on us going ahead first. We've been losing something like 90% of the season. If you are winning then it is different. The focus is on starting stronger in games, don't wait until the first goal to be more aggressive."
"We need to start stronger as it gets easier if you are controlling the result.”
REUTERS/Scott HeppellWhether the Club Strengthened in All the Positions Wanted This Summer
“I'm very happy with the signings we made. Do I want more signings? At the end, the club has decided those signings we have done are the ones that will improve our team. There were other options we decided not to take for different reasons, sometimes sporting or economical; the deal didn't make sense in the market.”
And he reaffirmed his belief that the squad he has is a good one:
“But I'm happy now. Have a lot of quality in the team. Moment is for the players to give it all they have.”
An Injury Update
The Anfield boss provided an update on some key players' fitness as Joe Gomez appears the closest to a return:
“Closest one is Joe. He will start training with us next week. Next one is Leoni, he could be training during the break with the group. Conor and especially Hugo longer.”
On Rio Ngumoha
The newly turned 18-year-old struggled against Newcastle on the opening day, playing on the right wing, and was used off the bench against Nottingham Forest, but Andoni Iraola believes that Rio needs time to learn the position, and he already looks like a Premier League player at such a young age:
“We know Rio can play on the left and showed his qualities. He needs to develop on the right so it gives him more options to play. He is so young; because he wasn't incredible in the first game on the right, we can't say he will never play on the right anymore. Victor has played more games on the left in his career but has maybe been even better on the right.”
“Sometimes it's a matter of the connections they may around them. We trust the wingers we have; they will all get minutes. Rio looks already like a player in the Premier League because he's very good.”
Reuters/Jason CairnduffOn if there is enough cover at Right-Back and in Midfield
Finally, Iraola was asked if he felt he had adequate cover at both right-back and in central midfield, after the club opted not to bring in any players in those areas, despite links to both right-back, Malo Gusto, and midfielder, Lamine Camara:
“Challenge in the squad now is we don't have Conor there at right-back. That's why I value Dom at right-back as he can play there. Versatility in the player helps us go through the moments when we have injuries. In midfield we have good numbers.”
“Now it's a matter of getting the right calls from myself. I'm finding now the best combinations and we are going through a period now where we will play a lot of games and we'll have a chance to see the options we have and the combinations we have. It's a matter of coaching.”
