Tottenham Hotspur have had their eyes set on Dutch international Cody Gakpo for some time now after the arrival of Italian manager Roberto De Zerbi. With The Reds hesitant to let the forward leave before the arrival of a winger, more specifically, Bradley Barcola.
Cody Gakpo seeks Liverpool exit.
Since joining Liverpool in January 2023, Cody Gakpo has played a key role in helping the club win the League Cup and Premier League. Now he seeks a move to English side Tottenham Hotspur.
It should not come as a surprise, as the Reds are stacked with options in the left wing position, with Rio Ngumoha, Victor Munoz, Federico Chiesa and the potential signing of Bradley Barcola all capable of playing there.
Tottenham Preparing Bid
Reports from Lyall Thomas suggest that Tottenham are waiting for Liverpool to complete the signing of Barcola before making a move. Liverpool won’t want to risk not having another quality player available without already replacing them.

Should Liverpool Sell Cody Gakpo?
Whilst Gakpo isn’t coming off the strongest of seasons, he clearly still has quality. That was visible at the World Cup as he finished as the Netherlands’ top goal contributor, with 3 goals and 1 assist.
It is also fair to point out that a lot of the Liverpool squad severely underperformed at club level during the 25/26 season. Naturally, the forward players get the most attention when things aren’t going well.
However, with the potential signing of Bradley Barcola, will Gakpo be satisfied as a backup option when he’s so used to being the starter over the past 2 seasons?
There is also the argument that Liverpool are strengthening a rival. Whilst Tottenham aren’t Liverpool’s direct rivals, they have added huge amounts of quality to their squad, and a player like Gakpo is more than capable of performing against Liverpool, potentially taking points away.
Author’s Verdict
Cody Gakpo is a quality player and a departure of the Dutch winger would be a big loss. Liverpool would have seen their top scorer (Mohamed Salah) and second top scorer (Cody Gakpo) from their most recent Premier League title-winning season leave the club in the same summer.
A social media opinion does not take away that Cody Gakpo has contributed massively towards the club’s recent success. However, as Liverpool and Andoni Iraola point towards forwards with pace, an exit may be best for both parties.
Bradley Barcola would be an incredible piece of recruitment if they bring him in before any sale of Gakpo. In fact, there is a case to be made that the Reds would have upgraded.
