Liverpool’s transfer window may be closed, but one of football’s most decorated defenders has just emerged as a fascinating wildcard.
Would you be happy if Liverpool sign Dani Carvajal?

0%Liverpool’s summer business may be finished, but an unexpected opportunity has landed on the table. Dani Carvajal, one of the most decorated defenders of his generation, has reportedly been offered to the Reds and while the attraction is obvious, signing him would create a significant squad registration headache.
Liverpool Offered Carvajal
According to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, intermediaries have offered free agent Carvajal to Liverpool and Manchester City, while Fulham have also been approached.
The 34-year-old is searching for his next club after ending a trophy-laden 13-year spell at Real Madrid, where he collected 26 major honours, including six Champions League titles.

From a Liverpool perspective, there is certainly logic behind considering him. Conor Bradley remains sidelined following knee surgery, while Liverpool’s options at right-back have been stretched.
Jeremie Frimpong is available, but Andoni Iraola has also experimented with Ronald Araujo in the position, including during the victory over Ipswich Town.
Carvajal would offer something completely different. He would not arrive expecting to charge up and down the right side for 50 matches.
Instead, Liverpool could utilise his defensive intelligence, aggression and enormous experience selectively, particularly in Champions League fixtures or when Iraola wants greater security behind his attacking players.

There is, however, one sizable complication, Liverpool’s non-homegrown quota is already full.
Premier League rules allow clubs to register a maximum of 25 senior players, of whom no more than 17 can be non-homegrown. A player qualifies as homegrown by spending three seasons or 36 months registered with an English or Welsh club before turning 21, nationality itself is irrelevant. Carvajal therefore does not qualify.
Liverpool have already named the maximum 17 foreign-trained players in their 2026/27 Premier League squad. That means this isn’t simply a case of offering Carvajal a contract and immediately putting him on Iraola’s teamsheet.
To register the Spaniard for Premier League football, Liverpool would effectively need to free a non-homegrown place. That could require removing an existing player from the registered squad, making the sporting department decide whether Carvajal provides greater value than someone already included.
That makes this more complicated than the usual free-agent opportunity.
Injury History
At 34 and after serious injury problems, Carvajal would undoubtedly represent a gamble. But Liverpool wouldn’t be signing the Real Madrid version who owned the right flank for a decade.
They would be signing experience, mentality and emergency depth. And with Bradley unavailable, that might suddenly be more valuable than it sounds.
