Fabrizio Romano has revealed the 'inside story' of Liverpool's attempt to sign Khvicha Kvaratskhelia before the Georgian winger opted to join Paris Saint-Germain in 2025.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia: A Neapolitan and Parisian Hero
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is widely regarded as one of the best attacking wide players in the world.
The Georgian made his name in Serie A after he joined Napoli in 2022. During his time in Naples, Kvaratskhelia was a major figure in their first title triumph in 33 years - winning the Scudetto in 2023. His immense level of talent was so impressive that he was nicknamed 'Kvaradona' by the Napoli faithful in an ode to the great Diego Maradona.
Kvaratskhelia went on to join Paris Saint-Germain in January 2025. There, he has contributed massively to the Parisians' ongoing period of European dominance, lifting two European Cups alongside a host of domestic trophies.
However, his career could have taken a different path...
IMAGO/PsnewZThe Inside Story of Kvaratskhelia's 2025 Transfer
Fabrizio Romano, speaking on DAZN, revealed that it was 'nearly Liverpool and not Paris' for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
In January 2025, multiple Premier League sides joined Paris Saint-Germain in their interest in signing Kvaratskhelia from Napoli.
According to Romano, Chelsea were willing to include Mykhailo Mudryk in a deal for Kvaratskhelia, but were not able to make the transfer happen.
Meanwhile, Liverpool were said to have been 'very keen' on signing the player, but were not able to top the 'ambitious project' presented by Paris Saint-Germain.
It makes sense that the Reds were interested in Kvaratskhelia, not only because he was (and is) a fantastic player, but because in the summer of 2025 Luis Diaz left the club in what seemed a long-held plan to cash in on the Colombian star.
In fact, Liverpool's interest was revealed at the time by David Ornstein, who also confirmed Chelsea's and Paris Saint-Germain's desire to sign the player before the transfer was ultimately sealed by the Parisians.
Author's Verdict: One That Got Away?
At the time, and for a long period after, it did feel that Liverpool had severely missed out by not signing Kvaratskhelia. A player like him would have been a great help to Liverpool, especially last season, with his pace, power, and dynamism.
However, it is unlikely that the player himself has any regrets following the success he has already achieved in Paris. Meanwhile, the Reds will be more than happy with Bradley Barcola, Kvaratskhelia's former teammate, who has begun to show his own great talent at Liverpool.
Unfortunately, Kvaratskhelia suffered a devastating ACL injury during PSG's Champions League clash with Barcelona, and is set to miss the rest of the season. This will be a huge blow for the Parisians, especially now that Barcola is at Liverpool. The Reds' French star would have likely deputised for Kvaratskhelia for the rest of the season had he remained in Paris.
