"I wasn't here, but talking to the medical department, it was not just an ACL - it was a bad injury, a lot of things around the knee were involved".

"It's true that we've had, not a setback, but a little bit of a delay. The plan now is he starts in the next break. It's not that far, but it's a little later than we expected, yes."

The club's official statement confirmed that the decision to postpone Leoni's return was made to 'err on the side of caution'.

A Return Is Still Imminent

Leoni's long-awaited return is still imminent, with the setback only causing a month's delay. It makes sense for Liverpool to be extra careful with the youngster, especially when he is considered Jeremy Jacquet's long-term centre-half partner.

Reports have consistently highlighted how professional Leoni has been during his recovery, and how much effort he has put in to ensure that his time spent away from the pitch was not wasted.

Gregg Evans, for The Athletic, detailed Leoni's recovery journey: the youngster opted to carry out as much of his rehabilitation as possible at the club's training centre, in order to continue building his relationships with teammates and staff. Furthermore, he dedicated a great amount of time away from football to improving his English language skills.

The fruits of his labour could be seen in AXA's recent episode of Player Portraits. Sitting alongside Conor Bradley, Leoni's English was hugely improved compared to when he originally joined the club, and he cut a confident and relaxed figure during the show. His strong rapport with Bradley was also a pleasant sight, the two having built a friendship during their concurrent rehabilitation programmes.

Author's Verdict: Setback Does Not Diminish Excitement

Whilst it is a shame that Leoni's recovery timeline has been delayed, the excitement surrounding his eventual return has not diminished. His own assured demeanour and the positive reporting surrounding his rehabilitation efforts provide fans with confidence that he can pick up where he left off with his superb debut against Southampton.

Of course, even after his initial return, it will take time, potentially a significant amount of time, before he is truly match-ready. The most important thing is that he is prepared for next season, when he and Jeremy Jacquet are set to be the only first-team centre-halves left on Liverpool's books.
