Speaking after Liverpool's win against Brighton at Anfield, Florian Wirtz broke his silence on the criticism that he has faced this season.

Liverpool 2-0 Brighton

Liverpool came up against an in-form Brighton side at Anfield on Sunday, but walked away with all three points after an impressive 2-0 win.

Florian Wirtz was heavily involved; it was his deflected shot that put Liverpool ahead in the 17th minute.

Speaking after the game, Wirtz discussed the criticism he has faced this season and reflected on a strong Liverpool performance. He also provided an update after having to come off with an apparent ankle injury during the second half.

Florian Wirtz's Post-Match Reaction

Speaking to Viaplay, Wirtz allayed fears surrounding the severity of the ankle injury that saw him substituted during the second half. He said:

Such news will be a relief for Liverpool fans, even for those who may be more critical of Wirtz's performances than others. A serious injury to Liverpool's No. 7 would have left the Reds short, especially with Dominik Szoboszlai still recovering from his own fitness issue.

Speaking about those who critique his performances and the criticism he has faced this season, Wirtz told the BBC:

"Maybe I'm just an interesting guy! I just play my football. If people want to talk about me or judge me, that's their job. I'm not focusing on that."

Wirtz elaborated on his feelings towards his critics when he also spoke to Sky Sports Germany after the match:

"I don't pay attention to it at all. I genuinely couldn't care less what anyone has to say about me. So anyone is welcome to talk about me."

He also spoke on Liverpool's new identity under Andoni Iraola, and the positive direction he believes the team is moving in:

"In the first half, when we scored the goals, it was already pretty good 'Liverpool football'. I think we're simply moving in a good direction".

Author's Verdict: Florian Wirtz Unfazed by Criticism

Many will argue, quite fairly, that the criticism Florian Wirtz has received this season has been justified. However, it is also true that the attacking midfielder has improved markedly since he returned to Liverpool after the international break. That is only a good thing for everyone: himself and all Liverpool fans.

The fact that Wirtz seems unbothered by criticism is also a good thing. Any elite player needs to have that type of mentality if they want to succeed. It was quite refreshing to see Wirtz speak with some needle in his post-match remarks, something he could also look to bring more of on the pitch.

Wirtz seems to be quite pleased with the Reds' new direction under Iraola. It is interesting how he described Liverpool's impressive first half against Brighton as being an example of 'Liverpool football'. That is exactly why Iraola was appointed: to bring back a more reminiscent style of play.
