Liverpool center back Ibrahima Konaté is now set to be announced as a Real Madrid player as soon as tomorrow according to Guillermo Rai of The Athletic, as well as other sources.
This comes following the announcement of José Mourinho taking the reins of the Spanish side as long as current president Florentino Pérez is re-elected in the upcoming election at the club. It is currently unknown if Konaté's signing is also conditional on his re-election.
Konaté is set to sign a four-year deal in the Spanish capital and will join up with former Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold, who left Liverpool in 2025 to join Los Blancos.
Konaté has previously opened up about how the passing of both his father and Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota had affected not only his performances on the pitch but also his personal mental health.
Liverpool's Transfer Dilemma
Konaté leaving on a free transfer this season is yet another instance of the club struggling to get transfer fees for players who are departing the club. Ibou is one of three players who are leaving this season on a free transfer, but was the most unexpected of the group.
Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson are also bidding farewell to the Merseyside club, and unlike Konaté, they were given an opportunity to say their goodbyes to the Anfield faithful in a 1-1 draw against Brentford on the final day of the season. At that point, it was still being reported that Konaté's contract was still an item of discussion, and that he was still likely to renew his contract with the club.
In recent years, many of the clubs most talented players have been allowed to leave at no cost. Trent Alexander-Arnold was initially set to leave on a free transfer, but Real Madrid paid €10 million for the early release of his contract so the Englishman could participate in the Club World Cup in the United States that summer. Roberto Firmino, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Emre Can were all also allowed to leave the club for no transfer fees.
