1892 Holdings, the consortium led by Amit Bhatia and largely funded by Jeff Bezos, has acquired a much larger stake in Liverpool Football Club than initial reports stated. Read more:

What Was Originally Reported?

On the 14th of August 2026, the much publicised minority investment in Liverpool Football Club was officially finalised, with Fenway Sports Group confirming the sale of a significant minority stake in the club to 1892 Holdings (the consortium led by Amit Bhatia and funded largely by Jeff Bezos and Eduardo Saverin). Originally, it was reported that 1892 had paid c.1.5 billion pounds for a 30 percent stake in the club.

However, it has now been revealed that the investment is much larger than originally thought.

A Not So Minor Investment

Today, The Athletic exclusively revealed that FSG have in fact sold closer to 40 percent of the club to 1892 Holdings.

This is about as significant as a 'minority' investment can get, and The Athletic have also confirmed that 1892 retains an option to buy a controlling stake in the club within the next 12 months - although it is squarely described as an option and not an obligation.

For now, FSG retain both majority shareholding as well as operational control of the football club.

In their official statement, FSG highlighted this status quo, describing the deal as a "strategic investment that supports Liverpool FC's long-term growth" and outlining that "FSG continue to retain majority ownership and operational control of Liverpool FC."

These new figures alter what we thought we knew about the club's total valuation. Original reporting suggested that Liverpool was valued at over 5 billion pounds, using the sale price of c.1.5 billion for a 30% stake. Increasing the stake to 40 percent at the same price brings the total valuation of the club closer to 4 billion pounds.

That's a significant drop, but it must be remembered that the club's valuation is ultimately decided by FSG. For example, 1892's 12-month takeover option sets the total value at 8 billion dollars, or 6 billion pounds.

Author's Verdict: An Inevitable Takeover?

An extremely significant proportion of the club is now owned by 1892 Holdings, and it would not take much to turn their minority stake into a controlling one. The larger size of the initial investment, as now revealed, suggests that this is in the long-term plans of both the consortium and FSG. Especially when taken with the explicit option to execute such a plan included in the deal, even if there is not an official commitment to do so.

Regardless of what the future holds, what does the consortium offer FSG and Liverpool now? To put it simply, global expertise and influence.

Jeff Bezos dominates the United States' commercial market (if not the world's); the Mittal family, who are the force behind Amit Bhatia, have a huge influence in India, and Eduardo Saverin's home market is South America. FSG will see their influence and expertise as a way of supercharging the growth of Liverpool's global brand.

One thing is now for certain, a new era is upon us at Anfield.
