Liverpool have officially completed the arrival of Jeremy Jacquet, with the young defender becoming one of the first major pieces of Andoni Iraola’s new-look squad at Anfield.
July 1 marks the official beginning of a new chapter for Liverpool as Jeremy Jacquet becomes the next player through the door this summer, after signing and agreeing to join in January from Rennes.
This arrival is part of the club’s wider rebuild under new head coach Andoni Iraola. Liverpool aims to achieve both immediate success and long-term goals.
While much summer attention has focused on attacking targets and Mohamed Salah’s future, Jacquet’s arrival underscores another crucial aspect of Liverpool’s planning: developing the next generation of their defence.
A modern centre-back profile
Jacquet embodies the type of defender increasingly valued in elite football, as the Frenchman is considered a composed centre-back comfortable with the ball, adept at defending in space and confident in stepping forward with possession.
These qualities are vital in a system where defenders are expected to do more than simply stop attacks.
Under Iraola, Liverpool will prioritise intensity, pressing and controlled aggression, and a centre-back who remains calm under pressure and contributes to building attacks from deep is essential.
Planning beyond Van Dijk
Virgil van Dijk remains a cornerstone of Liverpool’s defence, setting the standard at the back however, the club recognises the need to prepare for the future.
While Van Dijk has been remarkably durable, succession planning is unavoidable, but Jacquet’s arrival isn’t about replacing Van Dijk immediately, instead it ensures Liverpool isn’t forced into a rushed decision when the time comes, with the club aiming to develop players before they become urgent needs.
Competition and development
Jacquet will join a defensive group including other young talents like Giovanni Leoni, reflecting Liverpool’s forward-thinking approach, and this fosters healthy competition.
Rather than relying on a single player to assume a major role, Liverpool appears to be building a group of defenders who can develop together, with the challenge now being integrating those players into Iraola’s methods.
Author’s View: Excitement brewing for a promising young defender
Jacquet’s arrival also fits the pattern of Liverpool’s summer recruitment, as the club are targeting players with potential to grow rather than simply buying established names.
That does not mean Liverpool are lowering their ambitions, instead it suggests a longer-term approach to squad building.
The new era at Anfield will require players who can perform now while also becoming the foundations of the future, and Jeremy Jacquet could be one of those players. As of July 1, the next Liverpool defence has officially started taking shape.
