UEFA Champions League: Matchday 2

A quick turnaround for Liverpool sees them making the trip over to Austria to take on LASK in a difficult away game in the Champions League.

After winning their first game of the competition at home to Atletico Madrid, the Reds will be looking to ensure they maintain their perfect start to their European campaign.

LASK v Liverpool ( 21st September 2023)

Some may recognise the name LASK from a few seasons ago, as LFC were in the same group as the reigning champions of Austria in the UEFA Europa League in the 23/24 season.

The Merseyside club played the team from Linz home and away, winning both times, however the last away trip resulted in a closer game than many expected.

Jurgen Klopp's team at the time would have gone into that game believing that while LASK may pose a challenge for them, Liverpool's superiority should shine through.

But stunningly, the home team took an early lead, one that they would hold onto until just before the hour mark where the Reds were given a penalty that was converted by Darwin Nunez.

At that point, the game had opened up, and this favoured the quality of the Anfield-based side over their underdog opponents.

The game ended 3-1, which would suggest that this was a routine victory, but it was anything but, and when Andoni Iraola's squad make the trip over, they will need to be on top form in order to avoid any major upsets.

Last Time Out: Liverpool v Manchester City

As previously mentioned, it is a very short turnaround for Liverpool as they have just come off the back of a momentum-stopping defeat, losing 3-0 at home to Premier League leaders Manchester City.

For the first 60 minutes of the game, Iraola's side was largely the better team, limiting the chances City had, while also pushing for a breakthrough of their own.

A second yellow card for Ryan Gravenberch, who was having an outstanding game up until that point, was a huge turning point in the game and left the Reds down to 10 men.

It was at that point that the Citizens assumed full control of the contest, with Haaland, Doku and Cherki all getting a goal to inflict Andoni Iraola's first defeat as LFC head coach.

But with plenty of positives to take from the overall performance prior to the sending off, can Liverpool bounce back immediately and secure a statement win away from home?.

LASK's Form

LASK go into this game off the back of a loss to title contenders Rapid Wien, and that follows an additional three games without a win for the Austrian outfit.

In their Champions League opener, they played Greek side AEK Athens away from home and fell to a narrow 1-0 loss, having been second best throughout the encounter.

This could therefore be a brilliant time for Liverpool to try and rebuild their confidence after a damaging defeat to Man City, with a convincing win here likely going a long way to achieving that.
