Liverpool have completed their search for a new sporting director as the club has announced the appointment of Julian Ward as Richard Hughes' successor.
Liverpool have moved quickly to put someone in the role of sporting director at the club, following the departure of Richard Hughes at the start of the month.
Hughes had been at the club for two years and had overseen the Reds' high-spending summer last year, paying big money for the likes of Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike.
But the Scotsman called time on his reign as LFC's sporting director, departing at the end of the most recent transfer window, and joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.
Criticised by many through this summer, Richard Hughes was seen as having one foot out of the AXA doors from the moment last season ended, with reports even emerging that he was helping his new side, Al-Hilal, with their recruitment, while also pursuing Liverpool's transfer targets.
REUTERS/Phil NobleThe message coming from the club was that Hughes' replacement was likely to be an internal appointment, someone who knows how the Reds operate really well, making it a seamless transition, which is exactly what has happened.
Who is Julian Ward?
Having initially joined the club back in 2012, Ward quickly rose up the ranks within the Liverpool recruitment team, first taking the role of European scouting manager, and then loan player manager.
Then in 2020, he would receive another promotion, becoming then sporting director Michael Edwards' assistant, with the pair working alongside each other for two seasons.
In this time, the Reds brought in Thiago Alcantara, Kostas Tsimikas and the late, great Diogo Jota. At this point, Julian Ward had earned the full trust and respect of the owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), so when Michael Edwards vacated his role in 2022, Ward was immediately promoted to sporting director.
REUTERS/Scott HeppellHe would go on to sign players such as Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez. But in 2023, he would step back from this role, citing personal reasons and a desire to spend more time with his family.
Ward would then return in May 2024 as a technical director for FSG, and has now subsequently retaken the top job in recruitment at the Merseyside outfit once again.
Liverpool's Announcement
Liverpool have now confirmed the appointment of Julian Ward as sporting director, with Ward assuming his role with immediate effect.
The statement goes on to talk about Ward's journey to get to this point, as well as some comments from FSG president Mike Gordon:
“We are delighted that Julian has agreed to take over leadership of our football operations department at this juncture, primarily because it is a role for which we believe he is the ideal candidate given his extensive experience of the football industry in general and Liverpool Football Club in particular.
“Julian’s appointment also represents the continuation of a long-standing relationship which has always served Liverpool well, and we very much look forward to the next stage in its development.”
Julian Ward then explained how excited he was to be given this role and thanked the trust and support he felt from the ownership group. He also highlighted his ambitions for the future and his confidence in the personnel in and around the club:
“I am incredibly excited to take on this role, and it goes without saying that I am hugely grateful for the trust that has been placed in me by ownership.
“Having been part of Liverpool’s football operation for more than a decade, I have a full appreciation and first-hand knowledge of the challenge that comes with the position, as well as a clear understanding of the demands and ambitions of this great club.
“This is an exciting period for Liverpool – on and off the pitch – in which change and opportunity go hand in hand, but at the same time the culture, values and principles that have underpinned the club for so long remain as strong as ever.
“As a football club, we will continue to create an environment that maximises performance while promoting the continued development of our players and our people.
“In Andoni, together with the wider team of staff across the AXA Training Centre, the Academy and AXA Melwood, we have the expertise, talent and conditions required to keep driving the club forward.
