Following the 2026 World Cup, Liverpool and Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk is set to hold talks on his future after turning 35 last month.

Liverpool Captain to Consider Retirement

Virgil van Dijk, the Liverpool and Netherlands captain, turned 35 last month and is approaching his ninth full year at LFC. In that time, he has solidified himself as one of the greatest defenders that Liverpool, and the wider football world, has ever seen. He has won a multitude of honours, including the European Cup and two Premier League titles - the second of which he lifted as club captain.

However, his international career with the Netherlands has not been quite as successful. Whilst the Dutch national team has been ever-present at the European Championships and World Cup during Van Dijk's career, they have never really been in the mix to win. The closest Van Dijk came to lifting an international trophy was during the 2019 Nations League final, when Portugal defeated the Netherlands 1-0 to be crowned inaugural Nations League champions.

Reports now say that Van Dijk is set to hold discussions regarding his national team future.

Virgil van Dijk to Speak With Netherlands' Coach Xavi Hernández

Virgil van Dijk's possible retirement from international football has been rumoured since the end of the 2026 World Cup. Ronald de Boer, a former Dutch international and Frank de Boer's brother, predicted that Van Dijk might have played his "last game" for the Netherlands at the World Cup in America.

Today, Paul Joyce, for The Times, has revealed that Van Dijk is set to hold talks with the Netherlands' new head coach, Xavi Hernández, before making a decision on whether to retire from international football.

James Pearce, for The Athletic, has corroborated Joyce's report and highlighted what Van Dijk has already said about the matter when asked if he would continue to play for the Netherlands ahead of the 2028 European Championships:

"It's a good question, I will have that meeting with the new manager first. Let's see."

"It's a little bit down to that conversation. Everyone wants to feel appreciated, loved and important. I feel like I'm still very much valuable and important for the team."

"If the manager sees it that way then we're going to have another good two years. If not then we will see. I will have the meeting with him and then we'll go from there."

Asked specifically whether he feels a need to focus on club football at this stage of his career, Van Dijk added:

"Not at all. Some players do but not me. With anything you do, you want to feel respected, loved and appreciated for your work and the quality that you bring. Let's see if that is still the case and then we'll go from there."

Author's Verdict: Virgil van Dijk Likely to Remain an International

Van Dijk's own words make it clear that he still desires to play for the Netherlands. It is understandable; he is their captain as well as Liverpool's and likely feels immense responsibility for his country - especially when they are about to experience a transition under the leadership of a new and exciting manager like Xavi Hernández.

However, it is clear that Van Dijk wants to feel valued, which has been a big theme of his international career so far. Many Liverpool fans will be aware of the scrutiny that he faces in his home country.

For Liverpool, it would be hugely beneficial for Van Dijk to retire from international football. It could even extend his Liverpool career by allowing him to rest and recover during international breaks, and would lessen the psychological load of leading both club and country.

It does, however, seem that the direction of travel is more towards Van Dijk remaining an option for the Netherlands. Unless Xavi Hernández, inexplicably, decides that his captain is no longer good enough to play for his new-look Dutch side.
