Liverpool is a club known for having many notable cult heroes through the years, and many of them have played a massive part in the success the club has seen. One of the most notable, however, is a Belgian striker by the name of Divock Origi.

Origi has notably scored many important goals in his spell as a Liverpool player and was a key player in Liverpool's run in the 2018/2019 Champions League, where the club would go on to win their 6th Champions League title, bested only by AC Milan and Madrid, with 7 and 15 titles respectively.

His contributions to the club caused fans to fall in love with him, and over the years, he would see a song made in his honor and a banner held up at Anfield reading "Football without Origi is nothing", which showed how highly regarded he was at the Merseyside club.

Origi's Origins

Origi signed for the Reds back in 2014 at the age of 19 for £10 million. He was sent back to Lille, the club he arrived from, immediately after the transfer. He would return to Liverpool the following summer, and his breakthrough would come in a 6-1 victory over Southampton, a game in which Origi scored a hat-trick.

Later that year, Origi would score two goals in the famous two-legged tie against Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League, including one on that famous Anfield night, where a late Dejan Lovren winner lifted the Reds into the semifinals of the competition.

In the 2016/2017 season, Origi was limited in game time, and the following summer, Liverpool would loan the Belgian to VfL Wolfsburg, where he would score 6 goals in his time at the club. Speaking to the Players Tribune, Origi said that upon his return to Liverpool after his spell in Germany, he was set to be sold, but after an offer from Wolverhampton Wanderers, He decided to stay with the Reds.

A Beautiful Comeback Story

Origi's first goal upon his return to Liverpool was an iconic winner against Liverpool's Merseyside rivals. Coming on as a substitute late in the game, Origi capitalized on an error by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to score a 96th-minute winner. It was a moment that sent then-Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp into a cross-field frenzy. It would prove to be the first of many iconic moments the Belgian would produce.

Liverpool would need another miracle, this time in the Champions League. The situation looked dire, and the English club was down 3-0 after the first leg against the then-reigning champions of Spain, Barcelona. Liverpool were without Roberto Firmino and Mohammed Salah, and the world believed Barcelona were on their way to another Champions League title.

Divock Origi knew that it wasn't over, and in the seventh minute, he slotted away his first Champions League goal, a rebounded shot, to lift the Anfield crowd. Georginio Wijnaldum would come on at half-time and quickly make his contribution to the match, scoring two goals in two minutes to level the score.

In one of the most iconic scenes in recent history, Trent Alexander-Arnold whipped in a cross from a corner before Barcelona were prepared, and the ball found its way to the foot of Divock Origi, who tucked the ball into the top corner of the Barcelona net, sealing a 4-0 victory on the night and a 4-3 victory on aggregate. He made the impossible victory, one nobody believed could happen, possible.

Origi would wrap up his Champions League campaign in style, scoring the decisive goal in Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid. He became the second Belgian player in history to score in a Champions League final.

Departure from Liverpool

Origi was announced to be leaving the Reds in June 2022. He would go on to sign a four-year contract with AC Milan in Italy, a spell that would prove largely unsuccessful for the Belgian striker.

He would return to the Premier League for a season-long loan to Nottingham Forest, and upon his return to Milan, sporting director Zlatan Ibrahimović announced that Origi would only be playing for the reserve team. In December of 2025, Origi terminated his contract with the Italian side and was without a club until his retirement announcement on June 8th, 2026.
