With Ibrahima Konaté facing a bombshell exit, the Reds are eyeing Nico Schlotterbeck’s release clause to rescue a fragile backline and partner an increasingly isolated Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool’s defensive rebuild is no longer something for the club to gradually consider over the coming years, especially with Ibrahima Konaté now expected to leave.

It means Liverpool suddenly look short at centre-back heading into a season where pressure on Arne Slot is already enormous following last season

Growing links to Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck have arose, and these feel hugely significant and necessary.

According to reports, namely football insider David OCKOP, Liverpool are one of the few clubs capable of activating Schlotterbeck’s release clause this summer, alongside Real Madrid.

It is also reported that representatives previously met at the AXA Training Centre, while the clause is believed to be worth around €50-60 million and expires around the time of the World Cup final on the 19th July.

Timing in this instant increasingly matters because Liverpool cannot afford hesitation defensively anymore.

The 25/26 season exposed huge issues throughout the side, especially the fragilities in the back line. Liverpool lost physical battles, looked vulnerable in transitions, and would often collapse once games swung against their balance.

Konaté’s athleticism could cover flaws within the structure itself, but he is set to depart, and suddenly, Virgil van Dijk looks increasingly isolated.

While Van Dijk remains one of the best defenders of recent times, Liverpool simply cannot continue to rely on him to carry the defence through another physically demanding season at this stage of his career, as the squad looks too light and Van Dijk will naturally burn out with age, meaning help is required.

Schlotterbeck's Style of Play

That is partly why Schlotterbeck makes so much sense from a depth and style point of view.

When on top of his game, the German international often brings an aggressive, front-footed and physically dominant style while also remaining extremely comfortable in possession and playing passes into progressive areas.

Liverpool imminently lacked true authority in their defensive quarter last campaign, particularly once momentum yielded against them.

Schlotterbeck plays with intensity and right now, intensity is something Liverpool need to rediscover an identity across their entire squad.

The links also suggest Liverpool are now targeting defenders capable of immediately transforming the level of the back line rather than simply adding depth options with several names across Europe beginning to truly to circulate and Schlotterbeck is one, but has a different profile to other names linked.

This would not be a squad addition, it would be a statement signing and one Liverpool need to make in a position that has become immaterial to avoid.

Supporters can get on board with transition, but they won’t accept another below-par campaign where the team looks as emotionally and structurally incapable and unstable as it did for the culmination of last year.

That is why this summer feels so important because Liverpool are not tweaking a title-winning machine anymore, they are trying to rebuild authority, identity and control after watching an entire season spiral into mediocre standards

Defensively, Schlotterbeck increasingly looks like exactly the type of player they need to begin doing that in one of Liverpool’s bedrock positions.
