Anfield officials move to secure their midfield engine, prioritizing a long-term deal for the Hungarian star to anchor a squad facing significant leadership transitions and structural upheaval.

Liverpool FC has reportedly opened talks with Dominik Szoboszlai over a new contract as the club attempts to secure the long-term future of one of its most critical players.

While no agreement in principle has yet been reached, discussions beginning now feels significant given Szoboszlai’s growing importance to both the squad and the wider future of Liverpool itself.

And after last season, keeping hold of players like him feels absolutely essential, especially with how the Hungarian performed for Liverpool over the course of the campaign.

Szoboszlai’s current deal is due to expire next summer, meaning Liverpool are entering a critical period regarding his future. Allowing the situation to drift much further would inevitably increase uncertainty, with contracts and how they have been managed over the course of the last two years, also given the level of interest Europe’s biggest clubs would likely show in a player of his quality.

Throughout huge stretches of the season, there were times where the Hungarian looked to be the only player capable of dragging Liverpool through difficult spells.

While performances around him faded in all aspects of play, Szoboszlai repeatedly continued demanding the ball, driving the team forward and attempting to raise intensity into games that often had none, a mentality that matters and at a club currently losing major personalities and leaders.

With Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson already departing, Konate leaving at the end of his contract and uncertainty around several other senior players, Liverpool cannot afford another situation where one of the squad’s most important figures enters the final year of his contract without clarity.

And beyond ability alone, Szoboszlai increasingly feels a central figure to what Liverpool’s next breath of success could become.

At his best, he combines technical quality with aggression, athleticism, and renewed impetus, which are qualities Liverpool badly lacked collectively throughout much of last season. Even when the side looked mentally fragile or overwhelmed, Szoboszlai was often the player still attempting to carry responsibility.

That is partly why supporters have connected so strongly with him because Szoboszlai can’t always produce perfect performances, but what he gives is a player who consistently looks like somebody who understands the standards required at Liverpool.

The timing of these talks therefore feels important.

Liverpool are entering one of the most unstable periods the club has faced in years, with a major rebuild needed all over the park to paper over huge cracks arising and several summer signings from last year still having clear question marks surrounding them after disappointing births at Anfield.

Amid all of that uncertainty, securing Szoboszlai long-term would at least provide Liverpool with one clear foundation to build around moving forward.

Of course, the fact no agreement has yet been reached means there is still work to do and after the rollercoaster of last season, Liverpool supporters will undoubtedly want reassurance that the club can retain its most important players while rebuilding the squad around them.

Because right now, Szoboszlai feels like one of the few players Liverpool genuinely cannot afford to lose.
