Rio Ngumoha has become an important squad member for Liverpool. But his future remains open, with a new contract not yet forthcoming amidst interest from multiple other clubs during the summer transfer window.
Rio Ngumoha's Start to the Season
Rio Ngumoha has played in five of Liverpool's seven matches so far this season; he has only started once in the Premier League, against Newcastle, but also against both Atletico Madrid and Tottenham in the Champions League and Carabao Cup, respectively.
He has not yet notched a goal or assist. But his performances have been steady, and he was particularly impressive against Atletico and Tottenham.
His performances so far have earned him a call-up to the England squad for the international break. This marks a meteoric rise for the youngster, who only made his Three Lions debut during a pre-World Cup friendly against New Zealand in June.

In September 2025, Rio Ngumoha signed his first-ever professional contract with Liverpool. Lewis Steele, for the Daily Mail, reported at the time that this deal saw Ngumoha's weekly pay rise from three hundred pounds per week to one thousand pounds per week. A healthy increase, but one that pales in comparison to the mega wages of his fellow Liverpool stars.
A year later, Nguomha has become a key squad option, and it makes sense - with only two years remaining on his first professional contract - that a longer-term, higher-value deal is on the cards.
In fact, James Pearce, for The Athletic, has confirmed today that discussions with the youngster's representatives are ongoing.
Liverpool's desire to extend Ngumoha's contract comes amid the watchful eyes of some of European football's biggest clubs.
The most recent and publicised interest has been that of Arsenal. David Ornstein, speaking on The Athletic Podcast two weeks ago, said:
"I think there is some interest from Arsenal in Rio Ngumoha. There's interest from a lot of clubs in him. They are allowed to like him, [but] it doesn't mean Liverpool will sell him; they want to renew his contract".
Ornstein also touched on Bayern Munich's widely reported summer interest, saying:
"...he was Bayern's top target at some point in the summer. I think they did quite a lot of work on it, but it didn't develop. Liverpool had no interest in trading him."
Clearly, and unsurprisingly, Liverpool want to keep Rio Ngumoha. The latest from James Pearce, aforementioned, confirms this. It is another question entirely whether a deal will be struck. It would be a huge shock if not, given Ngumoha's trajectory at the club so far.
Author's Verdict: An Easy First Win for Julian Ward
If Liverpool's (soon-to-be) next sporting director, Julian Ward, wants to get off to a flying start, he should make Rio Ngumoha's new contract his highest priority. The young winger, despite not having a totally riproaring start to the season, has already shown his importance as a key option in Andoni Iraola's attacking department. This is especially important given Iraola's insistence on squad rotation in the wide areas.
