Liverpool 0-3 Manchester City

After a competitive 60 minutes, a controversial red card for Ryan Gravenberch saw Liverpool fall to a three-goal defeat against Manchester City at Anfield.

The day after the match, Steven Gerrard undertook his brand-new punditry duties with Overlap Daily for the first time. During the episode, he discussed how the Premier League's Manchester City verdict affects him personally and shared his reaction to what was a deflating result for Liverpool.

Steven Gerrard on the Premier League's Guilty Verdict

Speaking on Overlap Daily, Gerrard explained how he feels about the Premier League's Manchester City verdict, a verdict that could directly impact him in relation to the 2013/14 Premier League title that Liverpool missed out on by two points to the Cityzens.

He said:

"It's not personal for me in terms of the Manchester City players, because they're all outstanding players. They've lived the moment and they deserve to."

"I'm not someone who's going to sit here and say I would accept a Premiership medal or I want one that they've got."

"I never won the Premier League; I was short in that department in terms of winning. I've come to terms with that."

Speaking about how he would have reacted if Liverpool's owners had been found to be cheating during his own playing career, he said:

"If this was Liverpool and the [ownership] tainted or tarnished [our] memories, I couldn't speak to those owners ever again."

Gerrard is evidently part of the camp that does not want to see medals and trophies redistributed by any future sanctions levied against Manchester City. It is ultimately a humble view, and one that many will agree with.

That does not mean Gerrard is at peace with the alleged cheating of Manchester City, however:

"I've heard a lot of City players, a lot of City fans and celebrity fans, say [that] you can't take them moments away from us."

"What about the memories they've took away from not just possibly me and the team I played in, but [everybody else] over that period of time?"

This view is shared across almost the whole football world. It was clear as day what the Manchester City away support thought about the Premier League's verdict yesterday, behaviour that has led many to deride City's continued involvement in the Premier League as a 'mockery'.

On the Game Itself

Speaking about the game itself, Gerrard was full of praise for Lewis Koumas in particular:

"He didn't look like an academy player out there. He played like a man. I'm proud of him."

Whilst Liverpool lacked cutting edge, Koumas's effort and endeavour could not be doubted. He gave everything on the pitch and led the press superbly well.

Gerrard described the atmosphere at Anfield as the "best" he had heard in some time:

"It was the best atmosphere in terms of noise levels I've seen and heard at Anfield for quite some time."

Speaking about Florian Wirtz's performance, Gerrard said:

"I'm not sure this Liverpool team is set and ready for Wirtz to come in and thrive...[but] he needs to do more. I see a player there; he needs to realise the situation he's in, but I wouldn't be giving up on him just yet. I think it's too early."

Gerrard's view on Wirtz is perhaps more controversial than his other statements. The German No. 10 continues to divide the Liverpool fanbase, and only more so after the Reds' defeat to City. Gerrard's own teammate, Jamie Carragher, called for Wirtz to be dropped from Liverpool's starting lineup after the match.

On Andoni Iraola's Start

Finally, touching on Andoni Iraola's start as Liverpool manager, Gerrard was again positive:

"I've seen enough to be hopeful. I like the way he's come across. I've liked his interviews. I was amazed by what he did at Bournemouth."

"Liverpool's performance from the start to the red card, to go toe-to-toe with City and dominate for large parts. Looking like the better team and the more likely team. I think you've got to give the manager credit for that."

Author's Verdict

It is hard not to agree with a lot of what Gerrard discussed in his post-match remarks. Particularly when it comes to Andoni Iraola's start.

Whilst a 3-0 loss is typically a damning result, there was a long period of genuine competition before Ryan Gravenberch's controversial red card.

Not everything was perfect from Iraola's side. Perhaps adjustments could have been made after dropping to 10 men for a draw to still be secured.

However, it is obviously going to take time until the Reds are fully shaped in Iraola's image. Huge decisions will have to be made as part of that process, including ones surrounding big names like Florian Wirtz.
