Trey Nyoni believes his first full year around Liverpool’s senior squad was an invaluable learning experience, with the teenage midfielder now determined to push for even greater involvement during the 2026/27 campaign.
Trey Nyoni has admitted he wants to continue forcing his way into Liverpool’s first-team plans after describing last season as an important year of development.
The highly-rated midfielder spent much of the previous campaign training alongside Liverpool’s senior players and gaining valuable experience under the club’s first-team setup.
Although opportunities on the pitch were limited at times, Nyoni insists the season was far from disappointing and believes it has laid the foundations for the next stage of his career.
Speaking about his ambitions for the new campaign, the teenager made it clear his focus is firmly on continuing his progression rather than looking too far ahead.
“A very good learning year”
Nyoni acknowledged that some supporters may have expected to see more of him last season but feels there was significant value in simply being part of the senior environment.
“I think just to keep pushing on.
“I know sometimes on the outside it looks like it wasn’t as great and obviously as a football player you want to play more, but I think last season for me was a very good learning year.”
The midfielder believes the experience of working alongside Liverpool’s established stars has accelerated his development.
“It was a good development year and an introduction into what it’s like to be in the first team.”
For a player still in the early stages of his career, those experiences could prove just as important as regular minutes on the pitch.
Opportunity under Iraola
With Andoni Iraola beginning his first full season as Liverpool head coach, Nyoni will hope another strong pre-season can help him climb further up the midfield pecking order.
The Spaniard has already spoken about the importance of using the entire squad across a demanding campaign, particularly with Liverpool competing on multiple fronts.
That could open the door for young players to feature more regularly throughout the season.
Nyoni has long been regarded as one of the brightest talents to emerge from Liverpool’s academy, with his technical ability and maturity attracting praise well beyond Kirkby, but the challenge now is translating that potential into first-team opportunities.
Pre-season the immediate priority
Rather than setting specific appearance or goal targets, Nyoni is concentrating on impressing during the coming weeks.
“I think this season [the aim] is just keep progressing and just keep pushing,” he explained, but obviously it all starts now with pre-season.
“That’s the most important thing at the minute and then the season will follow.”
It is a measured outlook from one of Liverpool’s most exciting prospects.
Author’s Verdict: Aware of competition for midfield places
Nyoni understands there is fierce competition for places in Liverpool’s midfield, but he also recognises that another productive pre-season could significantly improve his chances of becoming a more regular part of Iraola’s plans.
After spending last season learning what it takes to be a first-team player, the teenager now hopes the next step is making an even bigger impact on the pitch.
