Xabi Alonso has addressed Liverpool’s interest for the first time, insisting the timing ultimately led him to begin a new chapter as Chelsea head coach instead.

Xabi Alonso has finally spoken publicly about Liverpool’s interest, revealing it for the first time since becoming Chelsea’s head coach.

The former Liverpool midfielder had been heavily linked with the job before Andoni Iraola was appointed earlier this summer. However, Alonso has now embarked on his own Premier League journey at Stamford Bridge.

During his first interview as Chelsea boss, Alonso was asked about Liverpool’s approach and admitted the timing of the opportunity was crucial.

“It’s about timings.
“Today I’m here, first day in Stamford Bridge, press conference with you gentlemen, so I am looking forward to this challenge.”

Liverpool move never materialised

Alonso was a leading candidate linked with Liverpool before the Reds ultimately chose Andoni Iraola.

Throughout the recent months, speculation about his future intensified but the Spaniard has now made it clear his full attention is on Chelsea after accepting their offer.

“It’s a big challenge.
“But I like football, Chelsea’s one of the biggest clubs and I’m looking forward to having success here.”

Although he stopped short of discussing the details of Liverpool’s interest, his comments suggest circumstances ultimately dictated the outcome rather than a lack of appreciation for the opportunity.

New chapter begins

Alonso arrives at Chelsea, having built a reputation as one of Europe’s brightest young coaches. His tactical approach has garnered admiration across the continent.

His appointment means the former Liverpool midfielder will return to Anfield next season as an opposing manager rather than the man many supporters once hoped would eventually lead the Reds.

Instead Liverpool begins a new era under Iraola while Alonso embarks on a fresh challenge in west London.

With both clubs expected to compete for top honours in the Premier League, Alonso’s meetings with Liverpool are likely to become one of the season’s most intriguing managerial storylines.

Author’s View: Speculation’s passed and new chapters begin in different directions

After months of speculation linking him with Anfield, Alonso has finally put an end to the discussion, for him the focus is now firmly on his job at Chelsea.

Whereas Liverpool turned to their own Spaniard to lead them, in Andoni Iraola, and excitement can brew after his first intake with the media.
