Dominik Szoboszlai Named Liverpool Player of the Season After Stunning Campaign

Liverpool’s Hungarian no.8 has been crowned their Standard Chartered Player of the Season.

In a season that seemed all negative, there were a few bright sparks, making the 90 minutes of football every weekend seem ever so slightly worthwhile. One of those was Dominik Szoboszlai.

It’s fair to say that there shouldn’t be too many complaints over Szoboszlai winning the award. A large part of the squad were underperforming, and he had been 1 of the few who had turned up. The only other candidates who had a realistic chance of winning were Hugo Ekitike and Virgil van Dijk. Milos Kerkez certainly stepped up too; he had a poor start to the season.

Whilst some will say he was just the best of the bad bunch, that shouldn’t be the case. Szoboszlai had an exceptional season at Liverpool, even finding himself voted as part of the Premier League fans’ Team of the Season.

In a season where Liverpool’s players seemed to lack urgency and intensity, that wasn’t the case for the Hungarian midfielder. Szoboszlai topped all of Liverpool’s key stats during the 25/26 season, even breaking records along the way.

Dominik Szoboszlai was asked to play 6 different positions/roles this season, including central midfield, right-back, right-wing, and centre-forward. He played a minimum of 10 matches in 4 different positions.

Let’s go back to the 3rd league game of the season, Liverpool vs Arsenal at Anfield. Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley were both unavailable, which meant that Szoboszlai had to deputise at Right Back.

Coming up against the soon-to-be Premier League champions, he limited Gabriel Martinelli so much that Eze had to come on, and he only saw similar results. Defensively, Szoboszlai was on point, and nobody could get past him.

Szoboszlai goes on to score one of the goals of the season from a free-kick placed 32.3 yards away from the goal. A success he repeated 3 other times this season, directly scoring from a free-kick, excluding his goal against Bournemouth, which had a touch from Mohamed Salah in the build-up.

This was just the start of what would be an incredible campaign for Liverpool’s number 8. He was widely recognised as the best performing player in the Premier League for a set amount of time, before team performances dropped drastically, dampening his chances of winning any recognised awards.

Dominik Szoboszlai topped the majority of stats this season for Liverpool. However, he also fared very well amongst players from the Premier League.

These aren’t cherry-picked stats; these are the ones that matter most. As well as producing his best goal-scoring season with 13 goals, he also had his highest assisting season with 12.

With goals and assists against Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa and against Crystal Palace in the Community Shield, these numbers haven’t been ‘stat-padded’ either. They’ve been earned through the sheer quality he has displayed throughout the season.

Liverpool’s Champions League hopes were dashed as soon as they came up against the European champions, PSG. Szoboszlai mentioned he had been dreaming of playing in the final as it was located in Budapest.

Once again, Szoboszlai topped the stats for Liverpool, becoming their top goal scorer in the UCL with 5 goals. The second highest for an ‘attacking midfielder’ in this season’s Champions League.

He also generated 4 assists, 1 better than Wirtz (3), as Liverpool’s top assist provider in the UCL. He finished 2 behind Michael Olise, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Achraf Hakimi, who generated the most.

Dominik Szoboszlai is a worthy winner of Liverpool’s Standard Chartered Player of the Season award. Not because he was a standout whilst others were bad, but because he has had an exceptional campaign.

Szoboszlai has received mixed feedback from Liverpool fans throughout his career; this season is no different. Some question if he offers anything on the ball instead of his exceptional work rate off it.

However, this season should have put those criticisms to bed. Congratulations to Dominik Szoboszlai on a great individual season. Let’s hope he can take that forward under Andoni Iraola.
