James Milner has announced his retirement from football, where he played for six English clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester City. During his career, he broke countless records, becoming the youngest player to score a goal at Leeds and making the most appearances at Brighton & Hove Albion.

At 40 years old, Liverpool legend James Milner has decided to hang up the boots and retire from football. A career that’s seen him win every single trophy at club level, making him one of the most decorated English players in the modern era.

He will look back on his career with immense pride, as he contributed massively to helping shape every club’s success that he was a part of.

Leeds United

James Milner has played for 6 different clubs during his playing career, all in England. He started his career as a 16-year-old at Leeds United in 2002. He became the second-youngest player ever to feature in the Premier League at the time.

We were winning comfortably, so I thought I'd get a good chance of coming on, and then West Ham came back, and I ended up coming on at 4-3. So the manager had faith in me to do that. Unfortunately, I passed it straight to Paolo Di Canio with my first touch, so that wasn’t the best idea!

 Newcastle United

James Milner’s time at Leeds United came to an end as he made a £6.4 million transfer to Newcastle United. Newcastle are the club where Milner made his 3rd highest appearances, as he played alongside Alan Shearer, Patrick Kluivert, and former Reds Craig Bellamy and Michael Owen.

Milner was present in the match-day squad in 2005 against Aston Villa, sitting on the subs bench, as he watched the infamous Kieron Dyer and Lee Bowyer fight break out at St James Park, which saw both players pick up red cards.

His performances earned him a loan move to West Midlands club Aston Villa for the 2005/06 season, which was later made permanent in 2008.

Aston Villa

Milner transferred to 6th-place Aston Villa, who were hoping to keep themselves fighting for European spots in the next season. Their squad had some memorable Premier League players such as Ashley Young, Gareth Barry, Gabriel Agbonlahor, and Stiliyan Petrov.

Aston Villa cemented themselves as a team that would battle for European spots as the club finished 6th in his final year at the club, which came just after 2 seasons.

Manchester City

The tempting project of Sheikh Mansour’s Manchester City was too much to resist as Milner made the next step in his career. Manchester City were knocking on the door of the Premier League’s top clubs as they wanted to claim the number 1 spot, which saw some incredible incomings over the years.

When James Milner joined the club, he was signed alongside Yaya Toure, Eden Dzeko, Mario Balotelli, David Silva, Jerome Boateng, and Aleksandar Kolarov. Manchester City climbed up the table as they hit 71 points, joint with 2nd place, and just 9 points behind Manchester United.

They weren’t going to stop there as Manchester City won the Premier League most dramatically we may ever see during our lifetime, thanks to Aguero’s late winner against QPR.

Milner played 26 league games that season, featuring at left midfield, central midfield, right midfield and even at full back - versatility has always been a key part of his playing ability.

Manchester City failed to win consecutive Premier League titles as their local rivals, Manchester United, won it the following year. But to bounce back, Milner had to break his next club fan’s hearts, as during the 13/14 season, Manchester City beat Liverpool to the title, as the Reds remained in chase of their first ever Premier League title.

After not signing a new deal at the club, his time came to an end in 2015, where he moved on to achieve success he wouldn’t have dreamt of doing so.

Liverpool

Some question marks were made around this transfer at first, but it all worked out perfectly. Liverpool were hoping to bring back the glory days, and following the sad end to the 13/14 Premier League season, the club record sale of Luis Suarez allowed the club to invest heavily during the next summer.

Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne, Roberto Firmino, Joe Gomez and Divock Origi were some of the key players Liverpool had signed, alongside James Milner.

Milner began his life at Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers, and due to continued poor performances, the club parted ways, bringing in Jurgen Klopp. This transformed the club and especially the role Milner was going to play, going forward.

Milner was known as Mr Versatile as he was asked to play several positions during his time at Liverpool, playing at left back for a whole season, right winger, right back, central midfield, defensive midfield, left winger and even as a centre-forward!

There was continued slow but steady progress for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, which saw them not just achieve Champions League qualification anymore, but also lift the European Cup in 2019.

Milner, at 33 years old, came off the bench in his second Champions League final appearance (his first came the year before against Real Madrid), ensuring Liverpool didn’t let go of their early 1-0 lead, which they later made 2-0, thanks to a goal from Divock Origi.

After the UCL triumph, Milner joked that he’d be having “something exotic like a lemonade” to celebrate. The previous year, when reaching the first UCL final of his career, he said he’d stretch himself to a Ribena to celebrate.

Whilst becoming a European champion is the pinnacle of success at Liverpool, they narrowly missed out on what is the highest quality Premier League title race in history, as the club finished on the 3rd highest points ever seen in the league (97), but missing out on their first league title by just 1 point.

Those players had a goal the following season, and that was to be the first set of players to lift the Premier League title in a Liverpool kit.

James Milner was then part of a Liverpool team that went on to break countless records as the club finished the season on 99 points, now the second-highest points tally in history, lifting the one that had escaped them so often, the Premier League.

He wasn’t the most talked about, but players of past and present love to show their appreciation to James Milner during podcasts and interviews, highlighting the importance he had for that set of players, which included Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker and more world-class stars.

A pleasure and a challenge. In the same moment, it means a pleasure because of his exceptional attitude, really. I think for a lot of experienced players, you use the word 'role model'. But Millie is the role model, how he puts himself pretty much in place to be every day 100 per cent ready. It's a pure example; absolutely outstanding.

Milner went on to complete club football with Liverpool before leaving the club as his contract had run out in 2023.

Brighton & Hove Albion

James Milner made the final move of his career to Brighton in 2023. With game time at Liverpool set to be extremely limited, he moved on to a club he could help push into a European spot, and during his final season, this was achieved.

He originally wore the number 6 shirt, but following the tragic passing of his former teammate Diogo Jota, he made the switch to number 20 ahead of the 25/26 season.

I wanted to do it as a mark of respect and obviously pay tribute to Diogo Jota, who was an amazing player who I was fortunate to play with and a great friend as well. It is a great honour to wear his number in the Premier League this year.

James Milner

He has had an up & down spell at Brighton, but there he achieved the record for most appearances in Premier League history (658), overtaking Gareth Barry’s previous record of 653.

An Incredible Career

James Milner’s career should be acknowledged as heroic. He was never the biggest name, but he didn’t care about that.

He even had a Twitter account made about him known as ‘Boring Milner’ as there was a perception that James Milner had no personality, so the account tweeted the most dull thoughts possible throughout the years.

He gave 100% to every single club he was at, progressing in his career as a Leeds United player at 16 years old to playing a key role in helping Liverpool win the UEFA Champions League and Premier League titles at 33 and 34 years old.

He’s seen it all at the top level. 903 appearances made up of a record in the Premier League, Europe’s most elite competition, where he reached 3 finals, multiple domestic cup finals, playing in the Europa League, 5 Community Shield matches and the countless heartbreaks and celebrations along the way.

Thank you for everything, James Milner.
